Atherothrombosis Research

Atherothrombosis research examines how atherosclerotic plaque and blood clots interact to cause arterial disease, including heart attack and ischemic stroke. The process typically begins when an unstable plaque ruptures or erodes, exposing thrombogenic material that activates platelets and the coagulation cascade, leading to thrombus formation and vessel obstruction. In genetics, researchers investigate how inherited and acquired genetic variation influences lipid metabolism, vascular inflammation, plaque stability, platelet reactivity, and treatment response. These studies can identify disease-risk pathways, support biomarker development, improve prediction of cardiovascular events, and guide more individualized strategies for prevention and antithrombotic therapy.
