Breast Tumor Mice

Breast tumor mice are laboratory mouse models that develop or carry mammary tumors, providing a controlled system for studying breast cancer in a living organism. Tumors may arise after researchers implant breast cancer cells or tissue, or introduce genetic alterations that drive abnormal mammary-cell growth; tumor progression then reflects interactions among cancer cells, surrounding stroma, blood vessels, and, in some models, the immune system. These models help researchers investigate cancer initiation, metastasis, tumor biology, and treatment response while evaluating potential drugs and therapeutic strategies before clinical studies. Their findings support more precise experimental design and improved understanding of breast cancer mechanisms.

Initiation of Metastatic Breast Carcinoma by Targeting of the Ductal Epithelium with Adenovirus-Cre: A Novel Transgenic Mouse Model of Breast Cancer

Activation of latent mutations with adenovirus-Cre into the mammary ductal system results in a clinically relevant metastatic breast cancer. Incorporation of a YFP promoter allows tracking of distal metastatic tumor cells. This model is useful to study latent metastasis, anti-tumor immunity, and for designing novel immunotherapies to treat breast cancer.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models and transplantable genetically engineered mouse models faithfully recapitulate human disease and are preferred models for basic and translational breast cancer research. Here, a method is described to orthotopically transplant breast tumor fragments into the mammary fat pad to study tumor biology and evaluate drug response.
