Collagen Regeneration

Collagen regeneration is the biological repair and renewal of collagen, the structural protein that provides strength and organization to skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, and other connective tissues. It depends on fibroblasts and related cells synthesizing procollagen, which is processed and assembled into extracellular matrix fibers while older or damaged collagen is degraded and replaced. In medicine, collagen regeneration supports wound healing, tissue repair, scar management, and regenerative treatments for musculoskeletal and dermatological conditions. Understanding this balance helps researchers evaluate biomaterials, cell-based therapies, and treatments designed to restore tissue structure, improve function, and promote more effective healing.

Liver diseases are induced by many causes that promote fibrosis or cirrhosis. Transplantation is the only option for recovering health. However, given the scarcity of transplantable organs, alternatives must be explored. Our research proposes the implantation of collagen scaffolds in liver tissue from an animal model.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

In newt, the lens regenerates always from the dorsal iris by transdifferentiation of the iris pigmented epithelial cells (IPEs). Here we describe a procedure to culture dorsal and ventral newt IPE cells and their implantation to the newt eye. The implanted cells are then studied by tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry.

Tissue Regeneration with Somatic Stem Cells

2023

Somatic or adult stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, are capable of self-renewal but demonstrate a restricted differentiation potential. Nonetheless, these cells are crucial to homeostatic processes and play an important role in tissue repair. By studying and manipulating this cell population, scientist may be able to develop new regenerative therapies for injuries and diseases. This video first defines somatic stem cells, and then explores the role these cells play in tissue regeneration.
