Pre-treatment Biopsy

Pre-treatment biopsy is the collection and examination of tissue before therapy begins, providing a baseline diagnosis and helping clinicians select an appropriate treatment. During the procedure, a needle, endoscope, or surgical instrument removes a representative specimen, which pathologists evaluate using histology, immunohistochemistry, and, when needed, molecular testing to identify disease type, grade, biomarkers, and genetic alterations. In medicine, these findings distinguish malignant from benign conditions, guide treatment planning, and establish reference features for assessing response or disease progression. Careful sampling and accurate interpretation are essential because inadequate or unrepresentative tissue can limit diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.

pre-mRNA Processing

2019

In eukaryotic cells, transcripts made by RNA polymerase are modified and processed before exiting the nucleus. Unprocessed RNA is called precursor mRNA or pre-mRNA to distinguish it from mature mRNA. Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a “cap” to the 5’ end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5’ phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached to it (7-Methyl guanosine). This 5’ cap helps the...
