Aged Rat Brain

Aged rat brain refers to neural tissue from older laboratory rats, used to study how normal aging affects brain structure and function. It matters because this model links cellular and molecular changes to shifts in cognition, behavior, and vulnerability to neurological disease. During aging, cumulative effects such as altered synaptic signaling, reduced plasticity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammatory activity can modify neuronal communication and tissue homeostasis. Researchers use aged rat brains in behavioral studies, electrophysiology, histology, and molecular analyses to evaluate age-related mechanisms and test interventions intended to preserve neural function.
