Pediatric Neurological Disorder

A pediatric neurological disorder is a condition that disrupts the developing nervous system, affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, or neuromuscular pathways during childhood. These disorders can arise through diverse mechanisms, including genetic or developmental abnormalities, injury, infection, inflammation, or altered neuronal signaling, and may influence movement, cognition, communication, sensation, or behavior. In neuroscience, studying pediatric neurological disorders helps clarify how the nervous system develops and responds to disruption. Clinical assessment, neuroimaging, genetic analysis, and functional testing support diagnosis and guide care, while research into disease mechanisms informs therapies and improves long-term outcomes for children and their families.

Pediatric concussions can result in long-term sequelae with physiological and psychological perturbations. This pediatric concussion mouse model results in long-term neuroinflammation, white matter alterations, and neuronal modifications with behavioral dysfunction. The model can be adapted to differential impact locations or repeated concussions to assess lifetime changes.
