Spring Release Mechanism

The spring release mechanism is a model of how neurons rapidly discharge neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles into the synaptic cleft, enabling communication between cells. In this view, molecular components at the presynaptic terminal store tension as a vesicle approaches the plasma membrane; calcium influx then activates the fusion machinery, releasing that stored energy to drive membrane fusion and transmitter discharge. This mechanism helps explain the speed, timing, and reliability of synaptic transmission. Understanding it supports research on neural circuits, learning, neurological disease, and treatments that alter neurotransmitter release.

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

Frequency of Spring-Mass System

One interesting characteristic of the simple harmonic motion (SHM) of an object attached to a spring is that the angular frequency, and the period and frequency of the motion, depend only on the mass and the force constant of the spring, and not on other factors such as the amplitude of the motion or initial conditions. We can use the equations of motion and Newton's second law to find the angular frequency, frequency, and period. Consider a block on a spring on a frictionless surface. There...
