Predictive Validity

Predictive validity is the extent to which a measure, assessment, or psychological test accurately forecasts a relevant outcome measured later, making it important for judging whether scores support decisions about future behavior or performance. Researchers evaluate it by correlating initial test results with a prespecified criterion, such as academic achievement, job performance, symptom change, or treatment response, while considering the timing and reliability of both measures. In psychology, predictive validity helps assess selection tools, diagnostic instruments, and interventions, but strong associations do not establish causation and can vary across populations and settings. Examining it supports fairer, more evidence-based decisions and improves the practical value of psychological measurement.

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways. Unfortunately, being consistent in measurement does not necessarily mean that you have measured something correctly. To illustrate this concept, consider a kitchen...

VSEPR Theory for Determination of Electron Pair Geometries The following procedure uses VSEPR theory to determine the electron pair geometries and the molecular structures: Write the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Count the number of electron groups (lone pairs and bonds) around the central atom. A single, double, or triple bond counts as one region of electron density. Identify the electron-pair geometry based on the number of electron groups: linear, trigonal planar,...
