What is Matter?

La materia es cualquier cosa que tenga masa y ocupe espacio.

¿qué es la materia?

La sustancia del universo, desde un grano de arena hasta una estrella, se llama materia. Los científicos definen la materia como cualquier cosa que ocupe espacio y tenga masa. La masa de un objeto y su peso son conceptos relacionados, pero no son exactamente lo mismo. La masa de un objeto es la cantidad de materia contenida en el objeto y es la misma, ya sea que ese objeto esté en la Tierra o en el entorno de gravedad cero del espacio exterior. Por otro lado, el peso de un objeto es su masa afectada por la fuerza de la gravedad. Donde la gravedad jala fuertemente la masa de un objeto, su peso es mayor en comparación con su peso donde la gravedad es menos fuerte. Un objeto de cierta masa pesa menos en la luna, por ejemplo, que en la Tierra porque la gravedad de la luna es menor que la de la Tierra. En otras palabras, el peso es variable y está influenciado por la gravedad. Un trozo de queso que pesa una libra en la Tierra pesa solo unas pocas onzas en la luna.

Toda la materia en el mundo natural está compuesta por una o más de las 92 sustancias fundamentales llamadas elementos. Un elemento es una sustancia pura distinguida de toda otra materia porque no puede ser creada ni descompuesta por medios químicos ordinarios. Los principales elementos que componen el cuerpo humano son oxígeno (O), carbono (C), hidrógeno (H) y nitrógeno (N). Un átomo es la cantidad más pequeña de un elemento que retiene las propiedades únicas de ese elemento.

La mayoría de la materia ocurre en la naturaleza, ya sea como sustancias puras o como mezclas. Las sustancias puras tienen una composición constante. Todas las muestras de una sustancia pura tienen la misma composición y propiedades. Las sustancias puras se pueden dividir en dos clases: elementos y compuestos. Los elementos son sustancias fundamentales que no se pueden descomponer en sustancias más simples. En la naturaleza, los elementos rara vez ocurren solos. En cambio, se combinan para formar compuestos. Un compuesto está formado por dos o más elementos unidos por enlaces químicos.

Una mezcla está compuesta por dos o más tipos de materia que pueden estar presentes en diferentes cantidades y que se pueden separar mediante cambios físicos, como la evaporación. Una mezcla homogénea, también llamada solución, exhibe una composición uniforme y aparece visualmente igual en toda su extensión. El aire que nos rodea es una mezcla homogénea de nitrógeno, oxígeno, dióxido de carbono, vapores de agua y otros gases. Una mezcla con una composición que varía de un punto a otro se llama mezcla heterogénea, por ejemplo, una mezcla de arena en agua.

Matter is the substance that makes up the universe, from a grain of sand to a star. Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight depends on gravity.

Mass stays the same whether an object is on Earth or in the zero-gravity environment of outer space. Weight changes when gravity changes. An object weighs more where gravity is stronger and less where gravity is weaker. A piece of cheese that weighs a pound on Earth weighs only a few ounces on the moon.

All matter in the natural world is made of one or more of the 92 basic substances called elements. An element is a pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means. The main elements in the human body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. We get these elements from the foods we eat and the air we breathe.

An atom is the smallest amount of an element that still keeps that element’s unique properties. Most matter in nature is found as either pure substances or mixtures. Pure substances have a constant composition, so every sample has the same makeup and properties.

Pure substances fall into two groups: elements and compounds. Elements are the basic substances that cannot be broken into simpler substances. In nature, elements rarely occur alone. They often combine to form compounds, which are made of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds.

A mixture contains two or more kinds of matter in varying amounts, and it can be separated by physical changes such as evaporation. A homogeneous mixture, also called a solution, has a uniform composition and looks the same throughout. Air is an example because it contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases.

A heterogeneous mixture has a composition that changes from place to place. Sand in water is one example. These classifications help explain how matter is organized in the natural world.
