A nivel fundamental, toda la materia está compuesta por moléculas formadas por diferentes elementos químicos.
Los elementos son sustancias puras que constituyen un solo tipo de átomo.
La tabla periódica es una referencia estándar en química en la que los elementos se organizan de acuerdo con su número atómico creciente.
El símbolo específico utilizado para un elemento suele ser la primera o las dos primeras letras de su nombre. Los símbolos también pueden provenir del nombre latino o alemán de un elemento. Por ejemplo, el sodio se abrevia como Na para Natrium, y el hierro se abrevia como Fe para Ferrum.
El 96% de la materia biológica está compuesta predominantemente por cuatro elementos: oxígeno, carbono, hidrógeno y nitrógeno.
El 4% restante está compuesto por calcio, fósforo, potasio, azufre y hierro.
En los animales, mientras que el calcio es esencial para el crecimiento saludable de los dientes y los huesos, el hierro en la hemoglobina transporta las moléculas de oxígeno desde los pulmones a las otras células del cuerpo.
Además, los iones metálicos como el magnesio, el manganeso, el cobre, el zinc, el molibdeno y el potasio ayudan a las enzimas a catalizar diversas reacciones metabólicas.

Los elementos son las unidades más pequeñas de materia que no pueden descomponerse más mediante procesos químicos. Hay 118 elementos conocidos, pero no todos se producen de forma natural y sólo unos pocos son esenciales para la vida. La materia viva está compuesta principalmente de carbono, nitrógeno, hidrógeno y oxígeno, con cantidades menores de otros elementos como calcio, fósforo, potasio y azufre. Otros elementos también son necesarios para la vida, pero sólo en cantidades mínimas.

La tabla periódica proporciona información sobre las propiedades físicas y químicas de los elementos.

La tabla periódica organiza los elementos según sus propiedades físicas y químicas. Cada cuadrado de la tabla periódica muestra el nombre completo, el símbolo químico, el número atómico y el peso atómico de un elemento. El número atómico de un elemento corresponde al número de protones que se encuentran en su núcleo y proporciona información sobre el tamaño de un elemento. Los elementos se organizan en la tabla periódica en columnas (grupos) y filas (períodos) principalmente según sus números atómicos. También se agrupan según otras propiedades físicas y químicas, como la reactividad, la ubicación de sus electrones más externos y la capacidad de formar ciertos tipos de enlaces. Los elementos del mismo grupo (es decir, columna) varían en tamaño pero tienen muchas propiedades químicas en común entre sí. Por el contrario, los elementos en el mismo período (es decir, fila) son más similares en tamaño y tienen sus electrones ubicados en un lugar similar, pero varían mucho en sus propiedades químicas.
