Firing Rate

Firing rate is the frequency at which a neuron generates action potentials over time, providing a fundamental measure of neural activity in bioengineering and neuroscience. It depends on how synaptic inputs alter membrane potential, whether depolarization reaches threshold, and how the refractory period limits successive spikes; researchers typically express it as spikes per second. Measuring and modulating firing rate helps characterize neural circuits, evaluate electrophysiological signals, and design brain-computer interfaces, neuroprostheses, and stimulation systems. It also supports the study of how engineered devices interact with nervous tissue and how abnormal activity may relate to neurological disorders.

Here we describe an adaptation of protocols used to induce homeostatic plasticity in neurons for the study of plasticity of astrocytic G protein-coupled receptors. Recently used to examine changes in astrocytic group I mGluRs in juvenile mice, the method can be applied to measure scaling of various astrocytic GPCRs, in tissue from adult mice in situ and in vivo, and to gain a better appreciation of the sensitivity of astrocytic receptors to changes in neuronal activity.

This protocol aims to describe a new methodology to measure intrinsic cardiac firing rate using microelectrode array recording of the whole sinoatrial node tissue to identify pacemaking defects in mice. Pharmacological agents can also be introduced in this method to study their effects on intrinsic pacemaking.

Reaction Rate

2020

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...

2016

We describe the use of micro-thermocouples to estimate local temperature gradients in steady laminar boundary layer diffusion flames. By extension of the Reynolds Analogy, local temperature gradients can be further used to estimate the local mass burning rates and heat fluxes in such flames with high accuracy.
