Stress Relaxation Analysis

Stress relaxation analysis is a mechanical testing method that characterizes how a material’s internal stress decreases when it is held at a constant deformation, revealing time-dependent behavior important in bioengineering. During the test, a specimen is rapidly strained to a fixed level and maintained while the measured force or stress declines as polymer chains, fluid phases, or tissue microstructures rearrange. The resulting stress-versus-time response helps quantify viscoelastic properties, relaxation time, and material stability. Researchers apply this analysis to hydrogels, biomaterials, engineered tissues, and biological samples to evaluate mechanical compatibility, predict deformation under sustained loading, and guide the design of implants and regenerative medicine platforms.

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles

The period of muscle contraction primarily influences the duration of stimulation at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the presence of free calcium ions in the sarcoplasm, and the availability of energy or ATP to support contractions. When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open.

Source: Cayron, J., et al. Multi-scale Analysis of Bacterial Growth Under Stress Treatments. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates how to prepare and use a microfluidic plate for imaging bacterial cells under stress conditions. It outlines the process of introducing a bacterial culture and a stress-inducing antibiotic medium, followed by cell loading and microscopic setup. Time-lapse imaging in phase-contrast mode is then used to observe the development of elongated, filamentous cells...
