Light Adaptation

Light adaptation is the biological process by which the visual system adjusts its sensitivity as illumination changes, allowing organisms to see across a wide range of light levels. In the vertebrate retina, changes in pupil diameter regulate incoming light, while photoreceptors alter their response through photopigment bleaching and regeneration, shifts in cellular signaling, and neural adjustment of response gain. These coordinated mechanisms support vision during transitions between darkness and bright environments and help preserve contrast and visual information. Studying light adaptation informs research on retinal physiology, sensory processing, visual disorders, and how organisms respond to changing environmental conditions.

Here we describe a molecular readout of long-term olfactory adaptation in Caenorhabditis elegans. The Protein Kinase G, EGL-4, is necessary for stable adaptation responses in the primary sensory neuron pair called AWC. During prolonged odor exposure EGL-4 translocates from the cytosol to nucleus of the AWC.

Cellular Adaptation II: Hypertrophy

2026

Hypertrophy is the increase in the size of individual cells, resulting in the enlargement of a tissue or organ. Unlike hyperplasia, which involves an increase in cell number, hypertrophy is characterized by an increase in cell volume. This process often occurs in response to higher functional demand or hormonal stimulation, leading to the production of more structural proteins and organelles, thereby enhancing the cells' work capacity. There are two primary types of hypertrophy: physiological...

Major Components of the Light Microscope

2008

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

Adaptive Evolution of Bacteria Using a Microbial Microdroplet Culture System

Source: Jian, X., et al., Automated Microbial Cultivation and Adaptive Evolution using Microbial Microdroplet Culture System (MMC). J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the use of a microbial microdroplet culture system to drive adaptive evolution of bacteria toward methanol tolerance. By mixing engineered bacterial cultures with a high-methanol stress medium and segmenting them into microdroplets, the system selects for mutants that exhibit improved growth under methanol stress. Through...
