Neural Pathway

A neural pathway is an interconnected route through which neurons transmit information, enabling the nervous system to sense stimuli, coordinate responses, and regulate behavior. Signals travel as electrical impulses along axons and cross synapses when neurons release neurotransmitters that bind receptors on neighboring cells; repeated activity can strengthen or weaken these connections. In biology, studying neural pathways helps explain sensory processing, motor control, learning, memory, and communication between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Mapping disrupted pathways also supports research into neurological disorders and the development of targeted therapies.

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.
