Long-term Tumor Analysis

Long-term tumor analysis is the longitudinal study of tumor growth, composition, and behavior over extended periods, providing insight into how cancer develops and responds to intervention. Researchers combine repeated imaging, clinical measurements, and serial tissue or liquid biopsies to track changes in tumor size, cellular features, molecular profiles, and treatment response while accounting for evolving heterogeneity. In cancer research, this approach helps identify resistant cell populations, distinguish temporary responses from durable control, and relate tumor dynamics to disease progression. Its findings support more informative studies of cancer biology and can guide the development and evaluation of adaptive treatment strategies.

We have developed a collagen-based in vitro assay which promotes proliferation and invasion from samples of all breast cancer subtypes. Optical Projection Tomography, a three dimensional microscopy technique was utilised to visualise and quantify tumour expansion. This assay may be used to quantify drug response of individual tumour samples.

Luciferase-modified human brain tumor xenografts can be established intracranially in athymic mice, with subsequent monitoring of tumor growth and response to therapy using bioluminescence imaging. In combination with survival analysis, bioluminescence monitoring is an essential research tool for pre-clinical testing of therapies being considered for treating brain tumors.
