Alveolar Regeneration Model

An alveolar regeneration model is an experimental system used to investigate how the lung restores gas-exchange surfaces after injury or during development. These models typically examine interactions among alveolar epithelial cells, progenitor populations, stromal cells, and the extracellular matrix, with type II alveolar cells serving as a key source of cells that can differentiate into type I cells and rebuild the alveolar lining. In developmental biology, organoids, engineered tissues, and injury-based animal models help reveal the signals that regulate epithelial repair, cell fate, and tissue organization. Such systems support research into lung maturation, regenerative medicine, and diseases that impair alveolar recovery.

Here we describe the model and approach to study functions of pulmonary alveolar macrophages in cancer metastasis. To demonstrate the role of these cells in metastasis, the syngeneic (4T1) model of breast cancer in conjunction with the depletion of alveolar macrophage with clodronate liposomes was used.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
