Polystyrene Bead Suspension

Polystyrene bead suspension is a liquid containing uniform polymer microspheres dispersed as model particles for studying transport, flow, and interactions in engineered systems. The beads remain suspended through Brownian motion and fluid forces, while particle size, density, concentration, surface charge, and solvent conditions influence aggregation and sedimentation. Researchers use these suspensions to visualize microfluidic flows, calibrate imaging and particle-tracking methods, measure diffusion and rheological behavior, and evaluate filtration or separation technologies. Because their properties can be controlled and their motion can be observed directly, polystyrene beads provide reproducible systems for linking microscale particle behavior with engineering performance.

Tissue complexities of multicellular systems confound the identification of causal relationship between extracellular cues and individual cellular behaviors. Here, we present a method to study the direct link between contact-dependent cues and division axes using C. elegans embryo blastomeres and adhesive polystyrene beads.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is an effective method to manipulate cells. Printed circuit boards (PCB) can provide inexpensive, reusable and effective electrodes for contact-free cell manipulation within microfluidic devices. By combining PDMS-based microfluidic channels with coverslips on PCBs, we demonstrate bead and cell manipulation and separation within multichannel microfluidic devices.

A Bead-Based Multiplex Immunoassay to Identify Pathogen-Specific Antibodies in Saliva

2025

This video demonstrates a bead-based multiplex immunoassay technique to simultaneously detect antibodies for multiple environmental pathogens in human saliva. Fluorescent beads were coupled to antigens from different pathogens, which were captured using antibodies in the human saliva sample. Upon labeling the antibodies using a fluorescent reporter, the beads were analyzed using flow cytometry to assess the presence of different pathogen-specific antibodies in the saliva.
