Settling Rate Analysis

Settling Rate Analysis is the measurement and interpretation of how quickly suspended particles move through a fluid under gravity, an important tool for understanding sediment transport and water quality. The settling rate depends on particle size, density, and shape, as well as fluid viscosity and turbulence; it can be estimated from particle movement or changes in suspended concentration over time, often using column tests. In environmental science, this analysis supports the design of sedimentation basins and wastewater clarifiers, assessment of stormwater and reservoir sedimentation, and evaluation of how contaminants attached to particles may be removed, transported, or deposited.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

Measurement and Analysis of Extracellular Acid Production to Determine Glycolytic Rate

Glycolysis is a defining metabolic marker in multiple biological systems. Monitoring glycolysis by measuring the extracellular flux of H+ is common, but requires correction to be quantitative and unambiguous. Here, we demonstrate how to gather and correct extracellular flux data to distinguish between respiratory and glycolytic sources of extracellular acidification.

Reaction Rate

2020

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...
