Neonatal Rat Brain

The neonatal rat brain is the developing central nervous system of newborn rats, a widely used model for studying early-life brain development, injury, immunity, and infection. During this period, an immature blood-brain barrier and developing microglia shape how pathogens, inflammatory signals, and immune cells interact with neural tissue; cytokine production can influence neuronal survival and maturation. Research using neonatal rat brains helps clarify mechanisms of neuroinflammation, infection-associated brain injury, and host defense during development. The model also supports evaluation of antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory strategies and investigation of how early immune challenges affect later neurological function.

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of oxytocin receptor-rich nuclei from the neonatal rat brain. Coronal slicing, followed by identification and precise punching of oxytocin receptor-rich brain nuclei, enables the effective extraction of oxytocin receptor-rich nuclei for further analysis.

Isolating primary microglia from the cellular heterogeneity of the brain is essential to investigate their role in both physiological and pathological conditions. This protocol describes a mechanical isolation and mixed cell culture technique that provides high yield and high purity, viable primary microglial cells for in vitro study and downstream applications.

The isolation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes is a time consuming and unpredictable procedure. This study describes methods for cryopreservation and thawing of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes that allows for more efficient use of cells. The thawed NRCMs can be used for various experiments without the need for performing isolations each time.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.
