3d Ultrasound

3D ultrasound is an imaging technique that reconstructs a volumetric view of internal anatomy from reflected high-frequency sound waves, extending conventional two-dimensional ultrasound. A transducer emits sound pulses and records returning echoes as it sweeps across tissue or uses an array of elements; computer algorithms combine these measurements into a three-dimensional dataset that can be rotated, sectioned, and rendered in real time. In medicine, 3D ultrasound supports fetal imaging, assessment of organs and masses, and visualization of anatomy during selected procedures. It can clarify spatial relationships, improve communication of findings, and complement other imaging methods without using ionizing radiation.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.
