Drug Combination

Drug combination is the use of two or more medications together to produce a desired therapeutic effect, making it an important strategy in psychopharmacology and mental health care. Combined drugs may act on different neural pathways or influence one another through pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic interactions, resulting in additive, synergistic, or reduced effects that depend on dose, timing, and individual biology. In psychology-related research and practice, combination therapy can address multiple symptom domains, improve treatment response, or manage complex conditions, while careful evaluation is needed to identify adverse interactions, guide medication selection, and support personalized treatment planning.

Combined Effects of Drugs: Synergism

2023

Synergism is a useful mechanism where combining two or more drugs is more effective than each constituent used alone. Such combinations are also called supra-additive interactions. The drugs collectively enhance the final therapeutic effect by acting on different targets. Another advantage is that the low dose of each constituent drug is sufficient to achieve the desired effect. This helps reduce the duration of therapy and lower the adverse effects of these drugs. Such synergistic combinations...

Combined Effects of Drugs: Antagonism

2025

The combined effects of drugs can result in various interactions, of which an important type is antagonism. Antagonism is a mechanism where one drug inhibits or counteracts the effects of another drug. Antagonism can occur through various means, including receptor binding, allosteric modulation, functional interaction, chemical reactions, and pharmacokinetic processes. The most common type is receptor antagonism, where one drug acts as an antagonist to block the effects of another drug by...

2019

We present a microinjectrode system designed for electrophysiology and assisted delivery of experimental probes (i.e., nanosensors, microelectrodes), with optional drug infusion. Widely available microfluidic components are coupled to a cannula containing the probe. A step-by-step protocol for microinjectrode construction is included, with results during muscimol infusion in macaque cortex.
