Signal Transduction

Signal transduction is the process by which cells detect external or internal signals and convert them into specific biological responses, enabling communication, adaptation, and coordinated behavior. Typically, a signaling molecule binds a receptor, triggering changes in intracellular proteins through mechanisms such as phosphorylation cascades, G protein activation, or second-messenger production. These pathways can alter gene expression, metabolism, cytoskeletal organization, secretion, or cell survival. Studying signal transduction helps explain processes including development, immune responses, and nervous system function, while identifying pathway defects supports research into diseases such as cancer and guides the development of targeted therapies.

Mimicking the Function of Signaling Proteins: Toward Artificial Signal Transduction Therapy

2016

We present guidelines for developing synthetic 'chemical transducers' that can induce communication between naturally unrelated proteins. In addition, detailed protocols are presented for synthesizing and testing a specific 'transducer' that enables a growth factor to activate a detoxifying enzyme and consequently, to regulate the cleavage of an anticancer prodrug.

Signal Transduction: Overview

2025

Cells respond to many types of information, often through receptor proteins positioned on the membrane. They respond to chemical signals, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, and other signaling molecules, initiating a series of molecular reactions to produce an appropriate response. This is called signal transduction. Cells also coordinate different responses elicited by the same signaling molecule via mediators, allowing molecular cross-talk. Typically, signal transduction involves three...
