Muscle Attenuation

Muscle attenuation is the reduction of skeletal muscle size, strength, or functional capacity, often reflecting systemic disease, inflammation, aging, or prolonged inactivity. During infection, inflammatory signals can disrupt the balance between muscle-protein synthesis and breakdown, while reduced movement, inadequate nutrition, and altered metabolism may further accelerate loss of muscle tissue. Measuring muscle attenuation helps researchers and clinicians assess disease severity, nutritional status, physical resilience, and recovery. In immunology and infection research, this concept supports investigation of how host immune responses affect tissues beyond the site of infection and informs strategies involving rehabilitation, nutritional support, and control of persistent inflammation.

Transcription Attenuation in Prokaryotes

2020

Transcriptional attenuation occurs when RNA transcription is prematurely terminated due to the formation of a terminator mRNA hairpin structure. Bacteria use these hairpins to regulate the transcription process and control the synthesis of several amino acids including histidine, lysine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Transcription attenuation takes place in the non-coding regions of mRNA. There are several different mechanisms used to attenuate transcription. In ribosome mediated...

The goal of the protocol described in this paper is to induce compulsive-like behavior in rats for the study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This behavior is precipitated by attenuating a signal indicating that a lever-press response was effective in producing food.

Intradermal Immunization with Live Attenuated Sporozoites in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for immunizing a mouse model with live attenuated sporozoites. The radiation-attenuated Plasmodium sporozoites are injected into the dorsal side of the mouse's ear. After injections at multiple locations on both ears, the mouse is allowed to recover.

Generating Recombinant Live-Attenuated Influenza Viruses for Vaccines

2025

The video showcases a method to create cold-adapted recombinant influenza viruses. It involves transfecting human cells with bi-directional plasmids, followed by incubation at lower temperature incubation to yield viruses suitable for vaccine production, characterized by reduced replication in warmer conditions.

Ex Vivo Assessment of Contractility, Fatigability and Alternans in Isolated Skeletal Muscles

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.
