Deep Well Plate

A deep well plate is a multiwell laboratory container with relatively deep wells that hold larger sample volumes than standard microplates, making it useful for parallel biological experiments and sample processing. Each well acts as a separate vessel for operations such as cell culture, reagent mixing, incubation, centrifugation, or compound storage, while the plate format supports consistent handling with multichannel pipettes and automated systems. In biology, deep well plates streamline high-throughput workflows, including nucleic acid purification, protein studies, microbial growth, and screening assays, by increasing sample capacity and reducing transfer steps, labor, and contamination risk.

Jet Impinging on an Inclined Plate

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The goal of this experiment is to demonstrate how a fluid flow exerts forces on structures by conversion of dynamic pressure into static pressure. To this end, we will make a plane jet impinge on a flat plate and will measure the resulting pressure distribution along the plate. The resultant force will be estimated by integrating the product between the...

In vivo Imaging of Deep Cortical Layers using a Microprism

Right-angle microprisms inserted into the mouse neocortex allows for deep imaging of multiple cortical layers with a viewpoint typically found in slice. One-millimeter microprisms offer a wide field-of-view (~900 μm) and spatial resolutions sufficient to resolve dendritic spines. We demonstrate layer V neuronal imaging and neocortical vascular imaging using microprisms.

Corbo1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Quantitative assessment of prokaryotes can be onerous given their abundance, propensity for exponential proliferation, species diversity within a population, and specific physiological needs. Compounding this challenge, is the four-phase nature in which bacteria replicate (lag, log, stationary and death). The ability to accurately...
