Cancer Studies

Cancer studies is the multidisciplinary investigation of cancer, including how tumors develop, progress, interact with surrounding tissues, and respond to treatment. Researchers examine how genetic and epigenetic alterations disrupt cell-cycle control, apoptosis, DNA repair, and cellular signaling, allowing abnormal cells to survive, proliferate, invade, and sometimes spread through metastasis. In medicine, cancer studies supports the identification of risk factors, diagnostic biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and treatment strategies such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Findings from laboratory, clinical, and population research improve cancer prevention and patient care while advancing precision medicine and the development of more effective, less toxic therapies.

Pancreatic cancer stem cells (CSCs) can be expanded in vitro using the anchorage-independent sphere culture technique, which represents a powerful tool to study CSC biology and can serve as the first step to develop novel CSC-targeting therapies. Here the methodology for expanding, analyzing and targeting of pancreatic CSCs is provided.

2012

RNA interference (RNAi) possesses many advantages over gene knockout and has been broadly used as a tool in gene functional studies. The invention of DNA vector-based RNAi technology has made long term and inducible gene knockdown possible, and also increased the feasibility of gene silencing in vivo.

2015

Telomere and telomerase play essential roles in ageing and tumorigenesis. The goal of this protocol is to show how to generate two murine inducible telomerase knock-in alleles and how to utilize them in the studies of tissue degeneration/regeneration and cancer.

Here we describe the model and approach to study functions of pulmonary alveolar macrophages in cancer metastasis. To demonstrate the role of these cells in metastasis, the syngeneic (4T1) model of breast cancer in conjunction with the depletion of alveolar macrophage with clodronate liposomes was used.
