Avian Visual Signaling

Avian visual signaling is the use of body colors, patterns, postures, and movements by birds to convey information such as species identity, reproductive condition, territory, or danger. These signals arise through interactions between light and biological structures: pigments absorb selected wavelengths, while nanostructured feathers can produce structural colors through scattering and interference; movement and viewing angle further alter the signal received. Studying avian visual signaling applies physics to animal communication by linking optics, perception, and behavior. It helps explain mate choice, camouflage, species recognition, and adaptation, while informing research on optical materials and the effects of changing light environments.

Begin with a suspension of avian pathogenic E. coli or APEC in growth media.APEC is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects poultry by entering through the respiratory tract. After breaching the mucosal layer, APEC adhere to epithelial cells, multiply locally, and disrupt the epithelial barrier to enter the bloodstream. The bacteria then spread to multiple organs, causing systemic infection.Add an equal volume of the bacterial suspension to each well of a multi-well plate containing increasing...

Herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT) is widely used as a vector platform for the generation of recombinant vaccines against a number of avian diseases. This article describes a simple and rapid approach for the generation of recombinant HVT-vectored vaccines using an integrated NHEJ-CRISPR/Cas9 and Cre-Lox system.

We developed a sensitive technique to label newly synthesized mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in individual cells in order to study mtDNA biogenesis. The technique combines the incorporation of EdU together with a tyramide signal amplification (TSA) protocol to visualize mtDNA replication within subcellular compartments of neurons.
