Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

Le piante sonno spesso considerate
meno complesse degli animali,

ma proprio come gli animali,
sono formate da

organi e sistemi organici capaci
di funzioni specializzate.

La maggior parte delle piante
ha due apparati di organi:

l&#x27;apparato dei germogli e
quello delle radici.

Le radici generalmente crescono sottoterra.

Ancorano la pianta e
assorbono acqua e sostanze nutritive

dall&#x27;ambiente circostante.

I due tipi principali
di apparati radicali

sono a radici a fittoni
e a radici fibrose.

In un sistema a fittoni, una
radice principale spunta dal seme

con la germinazione
e cresce in profondit&#xE0;

per ancorare la pianta.

Radici laterali molto pi&#xF9; piccole
si diramano poi dalla radice principale.

In un sistema a radici fibrose,

Gli organi primari delle piante vascolari sono radici, steli e foglie, ma queste strutture possono essere altamente variabili, adattate alle esigenze specifiche e all&#x27;ambiente di diverse specie vegetali.
Radici
Mentre le radici si trovano pi&#xF9; spesso nel sottosuolo, questo non &#xE8; universalmente il caso. Le radici aeree sono tutte le radici che emergono fuori terra. Le piante epifite, come le orchidee, possono vivere tutta la loro vita senza toccare il suolo. Altri tipi di radici aeree, come quelle del fico strangolatore o banyan, germinano fuori terra ma crescono verso il basso, penetrando infine il suolo sottostante e apparendo a &#x22;strangolare&#x22; la loro pianta ospite.

Steli e foglie possono anche essere modificati per conservare gli amidi - tuberi come le patate sono effettivamente modificati steli, anche se crescono sottoterra. Plants are built from roots, stems, and leaves, but each organ can change to fit a plant’s environment. These structures may look very different from one species to another. They still carry out the main jobs needed for growth and survival.

Roots are usually underground, but that is not always true. Aerial roots grow aboveground. Epiphytic plants, such as orchids, can live without ever touching soil. In strangler figs and banyans, aerial roots begin aboveground, grow downward, and later reach the soil. Some roots are also specialized for support. Buttress roots help large tropical trees stand upright in shallow soil. Brace roots, also called prop roots, support tall plants like corn. These roots are adventitious roots, which means they do not arise from the primary root. Instead, they grow from nodes near the lower stem and angle into the ground.

Stems provide structure and hold up leaves, buds, and flowers. They also help position leaves so they can capture more light for photosynthesis. A stem has nodes, where leaves and branches attach, and internodes, which are the stem regions between nodes. The petiole is the stalk that connects a leaf to the node.

Leaves carry out most photosynthesis. Many leaves are thin and flat, which increases the surface area exposed to sunlight. The blade, also called the lamina, is the wide part of the leaf. Simple leaves have one blade per petiole, while compound leaves have several blades attached to one petiole. Some plants, such as grasses, do not have petioles. In these plants, the blade attaches directly to part of the stem.

Roots, stems, and leaves can also store food. Taproots, such as carrots and beets, are enlarged to store starches. Stems and leaves can store starch too. Potatoes are tubers, which are modified stems even though they grow underground. Onions are modified leaves that store starch.
