What is Matter?

La materia è tutto ciò che ha massa e occupa spazio.
Tutta la materia è fatta di sostanze fondamentali chiamate elementi. Ogni elemento è composto da atomi unici che conservano tutte le proprietà di quell'elemento.
La materia può esistere come solida, come ossa e denti, come liquida, come sangue e urina, o gassosa, come ossigeno e anidride carbonica.
La materia presenta proprietà fisiche e chimiche. Le proprietà fisiche della materia sono le caratteristiche che possono essere osservate e misurate senza modificarne l'identità e la composizione, come massa, colore, volume, densità, sapore o aspetto.
Alcune proprietà fisiche, come il punto di fusione e il punto di congelamento, possono essere misurate quando la materia passa da uno stato fisico all'altro.

Dove la gravitagisce fortemente sulla massa di un oggetto, il suo peso maggiore rispetto al suo peso dove la gravitmeno forte. Ad esempio, un oggetto di una certa massa pesa meno sulla Luna rispetto alla Terra perchla gravitdella Luna inferiore a quella della Terra. In altre parole, il peso variabile ed influenzato dalla gravit�. Un pezzo di formaggio che pesa una libbra sulla Terra pesa solo poche once sulla Luna.

Tutta la materia nel mondo naturale composta da una o pidelle 92 sostanze fondamentali chiamate elementi. Un elemento una sostanza pura distinta da tutte le altre materie perchnon puessere creato o decomposto con mezzi chimici ordinari. Gli elementi principali che compongono il corpo umano sono l'ossigeno (O), il carbonio (C), l'idrogeno (H) e l'azoto (N). Tutti gli elementi nel nostro corpo derivano dal cibo che mangiamo e dall'aria che respiriamo. Un atomo la pipiccola quantitdi un elemento che conserva le proprietuniche di quell'elemento.

La maggior parte della materia si presenta in natura, sia come sostanze pure che come miscele. Le sostanze pure hanno una composizione costante. Tutti gli esemplari di una sostanza pura hanno la stessa composizione e propriet�. Le sostanze pure possono essere divise in due classi: elementi e composti. Gli elementi sono sostanze fondamentali che non possono essere decomposte in sostanze pisemplici. Nella natura, gli elementi raramente si presentano da soli. Invece, si combinano per formare composti. Un composto formato da due o pielementi uniti da legami chimici.

Una miscela composta da due o pitipi di materia che possono essere presenti in quantitvariabili e possono essere separate da cambiamenti fisici, come l'evaporazione. Una miscela omogenea, detta anche soluzione, presenta una composizione uniforme e appare visivamente uguale in tutto. L'aria che ci circonda una miscela omogenea di azoto, ossigeno, anidride carbonica, vapori d'acqua e altri gas. Una miscela con una composizione che varia da punto a punto chiamata miscela eterogenea, ad esempio una miscela di sabbia nell'acqua.

Matter is the substance that makes up the universe, from a grain of sand to a star. Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight depends on gravity.

Mass stays the same whether an object is on Earth or in the zero-gravity environment of outer space. Weight changes when gravity changes. An object weighs more where gravity is stronger and less where gravity is weaker. A piece of cheese that weighs a pound on Earth weighs only a few ounces on the moon.

All matter in the natural world is made of one or more of the 92 basic substances called elements. An element is a pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means. The main elements in the human body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. We get these elements from the foods we eat and the air we breathe.

An atom is the smallest amount of an element that still keeps that element’s unique properties. Most matter in nature is found as either pure substances or mixtures. Pure substances have a constant composition, so every sample has the same makeup and properties.

Pure substances fall into two groups: elements and compounds. Elements are the basic substances that cannot be broken into simpler substances. In nature, elements rarely occur alone. They often combine to form compounds, which are made of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds.

A mixture contains two or more kinds of matter in varying amounts, and it can be separated by physical changes such as evaporation. A homogeneous mixture, also called a solution, has a uniform composition and looks the same throughout. Air is an example because it contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases.

A heterogeneous mixture has a composition that changes from place to place. Sand in water is one example. These classifications help explain how matter is organized in the natural world.
