Sheep Carotid Model

The sheep carotid model is an in vivo experimental system that uses the sheep carotid artery to evaluate vascular biology, biomaterials, and cardiovascular devices under physiologically relevant conditions. Researchers surgically access the vessel and may implant a graft, stent, catheter, or other construct, allowing blood flow, vessel mechanics, and host tissue responses to be monitored over time. Its vessel size and anatomy support testing of engineered grafts, drug-delivery systems, and endovascular technologies before clinical translation. By connecting device design with patency, healing, thrombosis, and remodeling outcomes, this model helps bioengineers assess safety, performance, and limitations in a living system.

2026

Here, we present an integrated protocol for generating controlled osteochondral lesions in sheep knees to establish an experimental model suitable for bone and cartilage tissue regeneration studies. The protocol outlines a method for inducing a full-thickness osteochondral defect in the femoral condyle, utilizing techniques that minimize animal welfare impacts and variability in results.

A model of stent implantation in mouse carotid artery is described. Compared to other similar methods, this procedure is very rapid, simple and accessible, offering the possibility to study in a convenient way the vascular wall reaction to different drug-eluting stents and the molecular mechanisms of restenosis.
