Advanced Glycation End Products

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are heterogeneous compounds formed when sugars react nonenzymatically with proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids. This process begins with a reversible Schiff base, progresses to Amadori products, and through oxidation or dehydration yields stable adducts and cross-links; AGEs can also activate RAGE, a cell-surface receptor, promoting oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. In biology and medicine, AGE accumulation is studied in diabetes, aging, kidney disease, and vascular complications because it can alter protein structure, tissue elasticity, and cellular function. Measuring or inhibiting AGE formation helps researchers investigate disease mechanisms and evaluate potential therapeutic strategies.

Metal ions can be separated from one another by complexation with organic ligands–the chelating agent– to form uncharged chelates. Here, the chelating agent must contain hydrophobic groups and behave as a weak acid, losing a proton to bind with the metal. Since most organic ligands used in this process are insoluble or undergo oxidation in the aqueous phase, the chelating agent is initially added to the organic phase and extracted into the aqueous phase. The metal-ligand complex is formed in...

Functional groups are groups of atoms with specific chemical properties that occur within organic molecules and are sometimes denoted as “R”. Functional groups can “functionalize” a compound by enabling it to adopt different physical and chemical properties. 2013

Recent development in gene targeting tools makes production of knockout (KO) rabbits possible. In the present work, we generated five Apolipoprotein (Apo) C-III KO rabbits using Zinc Finger Nucleases (ZFN). This work demonstrated that ZFN is a highly efficient method to produce KO rabbits.
