Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes

Genetically engineered mosquitoes are mosquitoes whose genomes have been deliberately modified to alter traits relevant to reproduction, survival, or pathogen transmission, making them important tools in genetics and disease-control research. Researchers introduce specific DNA constructs that can disrupt fertility, reduce a mosquito’s ability to carry pathogens, or bias inheritance through mechanisms such as gene drives, allowing engineered traits to spread through a population after mating. These approaches support studies of mosquito biology and may complement conventional vector-control methods for diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Zika. Their development also requires careful assessment of ecological effects, inheritance patterns, and population-level outcomes.

In this candid interview, Anthony A. James explains how mosquito genetics can be exploited to control malaria and dengue transmission. Population replacement strategy, the idea that transgenic mosquitoes can be released into the wild to control disease transmission, is introduced as well as the concept of genetic drive and the design criterion for an effective genetic drive system. The ethical considerations of releasing genetically-modified organisms into the wild are also discussed.

The protocols reported here illustrate three alternative ways to assess the performance of genetically-engineered mosquitoes destined for vector control in laboratory-contained small cage trials. Each protocol is tailored to the specific modification the mosquito strain bears (gene drive or non-gene drive) and the types of parameters measured.

2023

Genetic engineering – the process of purposefully altering an organism’s DNA – has been used to create powerful research tools and model organisms, and has also seen many agricultural applications. However, in order to engineer traits to tackle complex agricultural problems such as stress tolerance, or to realize the promise of gene therapy for treating human diseases, further advances in the field are still needed. Important considerations include the safe and efficient delivery of genetic...

Genetic Engineering of Model Organisms

Transgenesis, or the use of genetic engineering to alter gene expression, is widely used in the field of developmental biology. Scientists use a number of approaches to alter the function of genes to understand their roles in developmental processes. This includes replacement of a gene with a nonfunctional copy, or adding a visualizable tag to a gene that allows the resultant fusion protein to be tracked throughout development. In this video, the viewers will learn about the principles behind...

Genetic engineering is the process of modifying an organism’s DNA to introduce new, desirable traits. Many organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals, have been genetically modified for academic, medical, agricultural, and industrial purposes. While genetic engineering has definite benefits, ethical concerns surround modifying humans and our food supply.Scientists can Deliberately Modify an Organism’s GenomeGenetic engineering is possible because the genetic code—the way information is...
