Intraperitoneal Laparoscopy

Intraperitoneal laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows clinicians to examine and treat structures within the peritoneal cavity through small abdominal incisions. The procedure typically creates a controlled pneumoperitoneum, often with carbon dioxide, to separate the abdominal wall from internal organs, while a laparoscope transmits magnified images and additional ports provide access for surgical instruments. In medicine, intraperitoneal laparoscopy supports diagnostic inspection, tissue biopsy, disease staging, and targeted procedures while generally limiting surgical disruption compared with open abdominal surgery. Its use has advanced evaluation and management of abdominal and pelvic conditions and supports more precise, image-guided care.

Deep Neuromuscular Blockade Leads to a Larger Intraabdominal Volume During Laparoscopy

This article presents a method for measuring the working abdominal volume during laproscopic myomectomy using the surgical grasper, and applies this technique to obtain pilot data on whether deep neuromuscular blockade (NMB) can enable the use of lower insufflation pressure. Reduced insufflation pressure during laproscopic surgery has been shown to reduce post-operative pain, and thus the use of NMB during surgery may enable improved patient outcomes.

Synergistic Effect of Intracranial and Intraperitoneal Delivery of Analgesic Drugs on Thermal Pain Response in a Rat

Source: Martinez, E., et al. Intracranial Pharmacotherapy and Pain Assays in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the intracranial administration of an analgesic drug in an anesthetized rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula in the prefrontal cortex. An additional analgesic drug is co-administered intraperitoneally. Following recovery, the rat’s thermal pain response is assessed using Hargreave’s apparatus, where paw withdrawal latency is measured to evaluate the analgesic...

Here we describe a novel assay for monitoring prion uptake and trafficking by immune cells immediately following intraperitoneal inoculation by purifying and fluorescently labeling aggregated prion rods from infected brain material then monitoring their uptake and movement from the injection site and characterizing the cells mediating these events.
