Nerve Reconstruction

Nerve reconstruction is a group of surgical procedures that restores continuity and function to a damaged or severed peripheral nerve, helping patients recover sensation and movement. Depending on the injury’s location, length, and severity, surgeons align nerve ends directly or bridge gaps with nerve grafts or engineered conduits, creating a pathway through which axons can regrow toward their targets. The process may require microsurgical techniques followed by rehabilitation to support reinnervation and functional recovery. In medicine, nerve reconstruction is used after traumatic injuries and other conditions that disrupt peripheral nerves, while ongoing research seeks to improve graft materials, regeneration, and long-term outcomes.

This protocol presents a step-by-step instruction for harvesting the superficial inferior epigastric artery fascia (SIEF) flap and wrapping it around the reconstructed peroneal nerve defect in rabbits. This surgical addition of vascularization to the tissue bed of nerve grafts is used to improve regeneration outcomes.

This video demonstrates the staining technique of resin-embedded, osmium tetroxide-treated rat peripheral nerve sections using toluidine blue. The stained nerve sections help visualize the fine structures of peripheral nerves.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
