Adaptive Controller

An adaptive controller is a feedback-based system that continually adjusts its control strategy as a system, environment, or target changes. It works by measuring the system’s output, comparing it with a desired state, and updating control parameters to reduce error, often using online estimation of system dynamics. In neuroscience, adaptive controllers support closed-loop brain-machine interfaces, neuroprostheses, and neural stimulation by responding to changing neural signals and behavioral states. This approach can improve control stability, personalize device operation, and maintain performance despite signal variability, making it valuable for studying neural control and developing assistive technologies.

2014

Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) is effective for Parkinson’s disease, improving symptoms and reducing power consumption compared to conventional deep brain stimulation (cDBS). In aDBS we track a local field potential biomarker (beta oscillatory amplitude) in real time and use this to control the timing of stimulation.

A method is discussed by which the in vivo mechanical behavior of stimuli-responsive materials is monitored as a function of time. Samples are tested ex vivo using a microtensile tester with environmental controls to simulate the physiological environment. This work further promotes understanding the in vivo behavior of our material.

A Molecular Readout of Long-term Olfactory Adaptation in C. elegans

Here we describe a molecular readout of long-term olfactory adaptation in Caenorhabditis elegans. The Protein Kinase G, EGL-4, is necessary for stable adaptation responses in the primary sensory neuron pair called AWC. During prolonged odor exposure EGL-4 translocates from the cytosol to nucleus of the AWC.

(2015)This video demonstrates the method of repetitive hypoxic preconditioning (RHP) by exposing a mouse to controlled hypoxia cycles before inducing an ischemic stroke. The experiment evaluates its effects on blood-brain barrier stability, neuronal adaptation, and inflammation.
