Adult Photoreceptors

Adult photoreceptors are specialized light-sensitive neurons in the retina that convert visual stimuli into neural signals, enabling vision in mature organisms. Rods support dim-light vision, while cones mediate color and high-acuity vision; in both cell types, photon absorption by an opsin-bound retinal molecule triggers its isomerization, activating transducin and phosphodiesterase, lowering cGMP, and closing ion channels. This causes photoreceptor hyperpolarization and changes glutamate release onto downstream retinal neurons. Studying adult photoreceptors clarifies normal visual processing and the cellular basis of retinal disorders, informing research on inherited degeneration, neuroprotection, gene therapy, and other strategies for preserving or restoring sight.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...
