Behavioral Testing Apparatus

Behavioral testing apparatus comprises specialized equipment used to measure animal or human behavior under controlled conditions, linking observable actions to nervous system function. These systems regulate variables such as space, sensory cues, task demands, and reinforcement while recording responses including movement, exploration, learning, memory, anxiety-related behavior, and social interaction. In neuroscience, apparatus such as mazes, open-field arenas, operant chambers, and rotarod devices help researchers quantify behavioral changes after genetic, pharmacological, or neural manipulations. Standardized designs improve reproducibility and enable comparisons across experiments, supporting studies of brain circuits, neurological disease, drug effects, and the behavioral consequences of injury or treatment.

Fundamental, yet unique properties of the rodent olfactory system have led to its increasing study among biologists. A relatively simple assessment of its function is then also needed. Here we describe sensitive tests for the characterization of mouse olfactory sensitivity and preference.

Marble Burying and Nestlet Shredding as Tests of Repetitive, Compulsive-like Behaviors in Mice

Disease, head injury, genetic modifications, and treatment of mice with drugs can have profound effects on behavior. Utilizing well-characterized and validated approaches such as marble burying and nestlet shredding, compulsive-like behaviors can be documented accurately in mice as models of human obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

Battery of Behavioral Tests Assessing General Locomotion, Muscular Strength, and Coordination in Mice

Behavioral testing is used in pre-clinical trials to assess the phenotypic effects of a disease or treatment on an animal's wellbeing. In order to globally assess motor functioning, we selected tests for general locomotion, muscular strength, and coordination: the open field test, the mesh test, and the rotarod test, respectively.

A Simple Behavioral Assay for Testing Visual Function in Xenopus laevis
