원소는 화학적 과정으로 더 이상 분해될 수 없는 물질의 가장 작은 단위입니다. 118개의 알려진 원소가 있지만 이 모두가 자연적으로 발생하는 것은 아니며 그 중 극히 일부만이 생명에 필수적인 원소입니다. 생명체는 주로 탄소, 질소, 수소, 산소로 구성되어 있으며, 칼슘, 인, 칼륨, 황과 같은 다른 원소도 소량 포함되어 있습니다. 다른 원소들도 생명에 필요하지만 그 양은 미량입니다.

주기율표는 원소의 물리적, 화학적 특성에 대한 정보를 제공합니다.

주기율표는 물리적, 화학적 특성을 기준으로 원소를 구성합니다. 주기율표의 각 사각형에는 원소의 전체 이름, 화학 기호, 원자 번호 및 원자량이 표시됩니다. 원소의 원자 번호는 핵에서 발견되는 양성자의 수에 해당하며 원소의 크기에 대한 정보를 제공합니다. 원소는 주기율표에서 주로 원자 번호를 기준으로 열(족)과 행(주기)으로 구성됩니다. 또한 반응성, 최외각 전자의 위치, 특정 유형의 결합을 만드는 능력 등 기타 물리적, 화학적 특성에 따라 분류됩니다. 같은 족(즉, 기둥)에 있는 원소들은 크기는 다양하지만 서로 공통된 화학적 특성이 많습니다. 대조적으로, 동일한 주기(즉, 행)의 원소는 크기가 더 유사하고 전자가 유사한 위치에 위치하지만 화학적 특성이 크게 다릅니다.

인체를 구성하는 주요 원소와 미량 원소
