Chronic Studies

Chronic studies are investigations conducted over extended periods to examine persistent conditions, long-term treatment effects, or delayed outcomes. In clinical research, they use longitudinal designs with repeated measurements, follow-up visits, and predefined endpoints to track disease progression and distinguish sustained responses from short-term variation. These studies support evaluation of chronic diseases, treatment durability, safety, and quality of life, while revealing outcomes that brief trials may miss. Their findings help refine clinical decision-making, guide monitoring strategies, and identify evidence gaps for future research.

This video and protocol demonstrate how to implant a glass-covered cranial window in rodents. These preparations can be used for chronic in vivo two-photon imaging of the neocortex over time scales of months. It may also be used for other types of imaging, including optical intrinsic signal imaging.

This manuscript describes a rodent model to study trigeminal neuropathic pain. The methods described include surgical procedures to perform a chronic constriction injury of the rat’s infraorbital nerve and the post-surgical behavioral tests to measure the changes in spontaneous and evoked behavior that are indicative of persistent pain and allodynia.
