Virus Assembly

Virus assembly is the coordinated process by which newly synthesized viral genomes and proteins form infectious virus particles, making it a central stage of infection and a key target for antiviral research. After genome replication and protein production, structural components recognize one another, package the viral nucleic acid into a capsid, and, for enveloped viruses, acquire a lipid membrane containing viral proteins through budding from host-cell membranes. Studying these molecular interactions clarifies how viruses mature, spread, and trigger immune responses. It also supports the development of assembly inhibitors, vaccines, and engineered viral vectors for research and therapeutic applications.

A simple, efficient and robust way to synchronize the delivery of multiple viral components to plant cells via Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression is described. This approach is amenable for studying replication, encapsidation followed by in vitro reassembly of non-viral components into genome depleted optical viral ghosts suitable for biomedical applications.

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
