Brain Hemisphere Slicing

Brain hemisphere slicing is the controlled sectioning of a cerebral hemisphere into defined planes, enabling researchers to examine brain structure across its depth. The process stabilizes the tissue and guides a blade through sequential cuts, producing uniform sections that preserve spatial relationships among cortical and subcortical regions. In neuroscience, these sections support gross anatomical examination, histological staining, microscopy, and systematic sampling of neural tissue. Comparing slices across individuals or experimental conditions can reveal regional organization, lesions, developmental changes, and disease-related pathology, making the technique valuable for linking brain anatomy with function and advancing studies of neurological disorders.

Obtaining Horizontal Mouse Hippocampal Brain Slices

2025

This video demonstrates a detailed protocol for preparing horizontal hippocampal brain slices from mice, focusing on preserving the integrity of hippocampal fiber pathways. The process involves carefully bisecting and securing the brain, using a vibratome for slicing, and maintaining optimal tissue conditions with a carbogenated fluid, resulting in hippocampal brain slices ready for further experimentation.

Recording of Local Field Potential from Both Hemispheres of the Mouse Brain

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo recording of local field potential (LFP) from bilateral M2 areas of the mouse brain. An anesthetized mouse is secured and prepared for the procedure. To record LFPs, insert microelectrodes into the target coordinates of the bilateral M2 areas, which are responsible for complex motor movements.

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the unilateral hemisphere of rat brain, by placing a 25-mm figure-8 coil 1 cm lateral to the vertex on the biauricular line and angulating the coil by 45°. An in-house water cooling system was used for rTMS for more than 20 min.

Preparing Rhinal Cortex-Hippocampus Slices from a Rat Pup Brain

The video demonstrates a method for obtaining rhinal cortex-hippocampus slices from a rat pup's brain and culturing them in membranous inserts within a multi-well plate filled with media for further analysis.

Preparing Wedge Brain Slices to Visualize Auditory Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the process of preparing wedge-shaped brain slices in a laboratory setting. Using a vibratome, a wedge-shaped slice from a mouse's brain is crafted with varying thickness. This slice contains the auditory nerve root positioned on the thicker end, while the hearing-related neurons are located on the thinner end.
