Muscle Response Latency

Muscle response latency is the time between a neural or sensory stimulus and the beginning of measurable muscle contraction, making it an important indicator of communication between the nervous system and skeletal muscle. It reflects signal transmission along motor neurons, neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction, muscle-fiber excitation, and excitation-contraction coupling before force develops. In neuroscience, measuring this delay helps distinguish central processing from peripheral conduction and muscle activation, supporting the study of reflexes, motor control, fatigue, and neuromuscular disorders. Latency measurements can also evaluate injury, rehabilitation, athletic performance, and changes in nervous system function.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Modulating Muscle Response in Humans

Source: Kuhn, Y. et al. Intracortical Inhibition Within the Primary Motor Cortex Can Be Modulated by Changing the Focus of Attention. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to modulate motor neuron activity and measure muscle responses via electromyography (EMG). It outlines the steps for locating the motor hotspot, determining stimulation thresholds, and assessing the effects of subthreshold TMS (subTMS) on cortical inhibition.

2022

This article describes the semi-automated measurement of the amplitudes and latencies of the first five peaks and troughs in the auditory brainstem response waveform. An additional routine compiles and annotates the data into a spreadsheet for experimenter analysis. These free computer routines are executed using the open-source statistical package R.

Design Example: Frog Muscle Response

2024

A student is tasked to work on an intriguing experiment involving an RL (Resistor-Inductor) circuit to study the muscle response of a frog's leg to electrical stimulation. The RL circuit plays a crucial role in this experiment, providing the means to control and measure the electrical impulses that trigger muscle contraction. When the switch connecting the RL circuit is closed, a brief muscle contraction is observed. This is because, at a steady state, the inductor acts like a short circuit,...

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Latency

2025

Following the phallic stage in Freud's theory of psychosexual development, children enter a phase called the latency period, which lasts from approximately six to twelve years of age. Unlike earlier stages, where sexual impulses played a central role, Freud believed these impulses are repressed during the latency period, becoming part of the unconscious. This stage is often described as a time of psychological calm after the turbulence of the phallic stage. The latency period is not considered...
