Seedless Vascular Plants

Er zijn drie groepen planten op aarde: niet-vasculaire planten, zaadloze vaatplanten en zaadplanten.
 De zaadloze vaatplanten evolueerden als eerste gespecialiseerde vasculaire systemen, een aanpassing die hen hielp om de eerste hoge planten op aarde te worden.
 Tegenwoordig vallen onder zaadloze vaatplanten lycofyten en monilofyten.
Lycofyten zijn Lycopsida, Selaginella en biesvarens.
 Geen van de lycofyten zijn echte mossen, die niet-vasculaire planten zijn.
 Monilofyten zijn varens, paardenstaarten en Psilotum en hun verwanten.
Zoals alle planten vertonen zaadloze vaatplanten een generatie-afwisseling in hun levenscyclus, zoals hier is getoond voor een varenplant.
 Ze besteden een deel van hun levenscyclus als haplo&#xEF;de gametofyt en het andere deel als diplo&#xEF;de sporofyt.
 Net als niet-vasculaire planten planten zaadloze vaatplanten zich voort met sporen, niet met zaden.
De sporen zijn haplo&#xEF;d en worden verspreid door sori, op de onderkant van bladeren geclusterd.
 De sori zelf bevatten vele sporangia.
 Na maturatie gaan deze sporangia open en laten de haplo&#xEF;de sporen vrij.
De sporen groeien via mitose om de haplo&#xEF;de gametofyt te vormen.
 Door een gametofyt&#x2014;die meestal heel klein is en op of net onder het grondoppervlak voorkomt&#x2014; worden haplo&#xEF;de gameten gevormd door mitose.
 Een enkele gametofyt is eenhuizig en ontwikkelt twee verschillende structuren&#x2014; de antheridia en archegonia&#x2014; die gameten maken in mannelijke respectievelijk vrouwelijke vorm.
Zoals bij niet-vasculaire planten heeft de mannelijke gameet een flagel en heeft hij water nodig om naar de vrouwelijke gameet te bewegen naar een chemo-attractant om de eicel te vinden.
 Omdat de gameten in een enkele gametofyt genetisch identiek zijn door hun haplo&#xEF;de oorsprong, vinden kruisingen meestal plaats tussen verschillende gametofyten.
 Varens kunnen zelfbevruchting voorkomen door hun antheridia en archegonia op verschillende tijden te ontwikkelen.
De bevruchte eicel vormt een nieuwe diplo&#xEF;de sporofyt uit de diplo&#xEF;de zygote van de gametofyt en maakt zo de levenscyclus af.
 Net als zaadplanten is de levenscyclus van zaadloze vaatplanten door sporofyten gedomineerd.
 Maar anders dan bij andere plantlijnen leven hun kleinere gametofyten onafhankelijk, zonder voeding te leveren aan de sporofyt of te ontvangen van de sporofyt.
De hoofdeigenschap van zaadloze vaatplanten is hun gespecialiseerde netwerk vasculair weefsel, net als bij zaadplanten.
 Dankzij deze aanpassing kunnen ze water, nutri&#xEB;nten en andere organische materialen transporteren en groter worden, anders dan hun niet- vasculaire verwanten.

Zaadloze vaatplanten waren de eerste hoge planten op aarde

Tegenwoordig worden zaadloze vaatplanten vertegenwoordigd door monilofyten en lycofyten. Varens &#x2013; de meest voorkomende zaadloze vaatplanten &#x2013; zijn monilofyten. Gardevarens (en hun familieleden) en paardenstaarten zijn ook monilofyten. Tot de lycofyten behoren knotsmossen, stekelmossen en quillworts - geen daarvan zijn echte mossen.

In tegenstelling tot niet-vaatplanten hebben vaatplanten &#x2013; inclusief zaadloze vaatplanten &#x2013; een uitgebreid netwerk van vaatweefsel dat bestaat uit xyleem en flo&#xEB;em. De meeste zaadloze vaatplanten hebben ook echte wortels en bladeren. Bovendien worden de levenscycli van zaadloze vaatplanten gedomineerd door diplo&#xEF;de sporenproducerende sporofyten, in plaats van door gametofyten.

Net als niet-vaatplanten reproduceren zaadloze vaatplanten zich echter met sporen in plaats van met zaden. Zaadloze vaatplanten zijn doorgaans ook reproductief succesvoller in vochtige omgevingen, omdat hun sperma een laagje water nodig heeft om de eieren te bereiken.

De levenscyclus van zaadloze vaatplanten

Net als dieren wisselen zaadloze vaatplanten (en andere planten) tijdens de voortplanting af tussen meiose en bevruchting. Meiose is een celdelingsproces dat haplo&#xEF;de cellen produceert &#x2013; die &#xE9;&#xE9;n complete set chromosomen bevatten &#x2013; uit een diplo&#xEF;de cel &#x2013; die twee complete sets chromosomen bevat. Bevruchting daarentegen produceert een diplo&#xEF;de cel die een zygoot wordt genoemd, door de fusie van haplo&#xEF;de cellen die gameten worden genoemd &#x2013; sperma en eieren.

Bij de meeste dieren is alleen het diplo&#xEF;de stadium meercellig en zijn gameten de enige haplo&#xEF;de cellen. Planten wisselen echter af tussen haplo&#xEF;de en diplo&#xEF;de stadia die beide meercellig zijn; dit heet afwisseling van generaties. Afwisseling van generaties is een kenmerk van alle seksueel voortplantende planten, maar de relatieve grootte en prominentie van de haplo&#xEF;de en diplo&#xEF;de stadia verschillen tussen planten.

Bij zaadloze vaatplanten (evenals bij zaadplanten) is het diplo&#xEF;de stadium van de levenscyclus &#x2013; de sporofyt &#x2013; dominant. Wat de meeste mensen bijvoorbeeld als een varen herkennen, is de grote, onafhankelijke varensporofyt. Sporofyten produceren via meiose haplo&#xEF;de cellen die sporen worden genoemd.

Een spore kan door mitose ontkiemen en zich ontwikkelen tot een gametofyt &#x2013;het haplo&#xEF;de stadium van de levenscyclus&#x2013;. Gametofyten produceren eicellen en spermacellen via mitose (in tegenstelling tot dieren, die gameten produceren via meiose). De meeste zaadloze vaatplanten produceren &#xE9;&#xE9;n type sporen waaruit een biseksuele gametofyt voortkomt. Seedless vascular plants include ferns, horsetails, whisk ferns, and lycophytes. Ferns are the most common example. Whisk ferns and their relatives, along with horsetails, are monilophytes. Lycophytes include club mosses, spikemosses, and quillworts, and none of these are true mosses.

Seedless vascular plants differ from nonvascular plants because they have vascular tissue. This tissue includes xylem and phloem, which move water and nutrients through the plant. Most seedless vascular plants also have true roots and leaves. These features helped them become the first tall plants on Earth.

Their life cycle is dominated by the diploid sporophyte, not the gametophyte. The sporophyte is the familiar fern plant that people usually notice. Seedless vascular plants still reproduce with spores, not seeds. They also do better in moist places because sperm need a thin film of water to reach the eggs.

Like animals and other plants, these plants alternate between meiosis and fertilization. Meiosis makes haploid cells, which have one set of chromosomes, from a diploid cell, which has two sets. Fertilization joins haploid gametes, such as sperm and eggs, to form a diploid zygote. In plants, both the haploid and diploid stages can be multicellular, which is called alternation of generations.

In seedless vascular plants, the diploid stage is the larger and more noticeable one. The sporophyte makes haploid spores by meiosis. A spore can grow into a gametophyte by mitosis. The gametophyte is smaller and less complex, but it can still photosynthesize and does not depend on the sporophyte for food or protection.

Most seedless vascular plants make one kind of spore. That spore develops into a bisexual gametophyte, which produces both egg and sperm cells by mitosis. When fertilization happens, a diploid zygote forms. The zygote then divides by mitosis and grows into the familiar fronded fern sporophyte, continuing the cycle.
