Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

Planten lijken vaak minder complex dan dieren, maar net als dieren zijn ze opgebouwd uit organen met gespecialiseerde functies.
 Het merendeel van planten heeft twee orgaansystemen: de scheut en het wortelstelsel.
 Wortels groeien doorgaans ondergronds.
Ze zetten de plant vast en nemen water en nutri&#xEB;nten op uit de omgeving.
 De twee grootste types van wortelstelsels zijn penwortels en vezelwortels.
 In een penwortelsysteem komt een primaire wortel uit het zaad bij de kieming, die diep in de bodem groeit om de plant vast te zetten.
Van de primaire wortel vertakken zich veel kleinere zijwortels.
 Maar in een vezelwortelsysteem ondersteunt de primaire wortel slechts de ontwikkeling van de zaailing.
 Later vertakken zich uit de onder- grondse stengel veel dunne wortels.
Deze bijkomende wortels vormen een ondiep netwerk in de bodem die de volwassen plant ondersteunt.
 De organen die de scheut vormen zijn reproductieve of vegetatieve organen.
 Bloemen, vruchten en kegels zijn reproductieve organen.
Er zit veel variatie in de reproductie van planten en dus in de reproductieve organen die ze bezitten.
 Onder de vegetatieve organen vallen echter altijd stengels en bladeren.
 De stengel van een plant biedt structuur en ondersteunt de bladeren, knoppen en bloemen.
De stengel ori&#xEB;nteert de bladeren voor maximale fotosynthese.
 Stengels zijn opgebouwd uit knopen, punten waar bladeren en takken zijn aangehecht, en leden, de stukken stengel tussen de knopen.
 Een steel genaamd petiool maakt elk blad vast aan de knoop.
Het uiteinde van het blad heet bladschijf of lamina.
 Enkelvoudige bladeren hebben &#xE9;&#xE9;n bladschijf per petiool en samengestelde bladeren hebben meerdere bladschijven voor elke petiool.
 Nog andere planten, zoals grassen, hebben geen petiool.
De bladschijf wikkelt zich direct om de stengel.
 De bladeren voeren de meeste fotosynthese uit.
 De bladschijven zijn vaak dun en plat van vorm om zoveel mogelijk zonlicht te kunnen vangen.

De primaire organen van vaatplanten zijn wortels, stengels en bladeren, maar deze structuren kunnen zeer variabel zijn en aangepast aan de specifieke behoeften en omgeving van verschillende plantensoorten.

Wortels

Hoewel wortels meestal ondergronds worden gevonden, is dit niet overal het geval. Luchtwortels zijn alle wortels die bovengronds ontstaan. Epifytische planten, zoals orchidee&#xEB;n, kunnen hun hele leven leven zonder de grond aan te raken. Andere soorten luchtwortels, zoals die van de strangler-vijg of banyan, ontkiemen bovengronds maar groeien naar beneden, dringen uiteindelijk de grond eronder binnen en lijken te &#x22;wurgen&#x22;. hun waardplant.

Sommige planten hebben wortels die zijn aangepast om extra ondersteuning te bieden. Steunwortels zijn zo&#x27;n wijziging. Vaak te vinden op bomen die groeien in tropische gebieden waar de grond arm aan voedingsstoffen is en er voldoende water beschikbaar is aan de oppervlakte door regenval, bieden steunwortels structurele ondersteuning aan grote bomen met ondiepe wortels. Steunwortels of steunwortels zijn een ander type gemodificeerde wortel die hoge, ondiepgewortelde planten zoals ma&#xEF;s ondersteunt. Ze groeien als onvoorziene wortels &#x2014;de wortels die zich niet ontwikkelen vanuit de primaire wortel&#x2014; vanuit knooppunten nabij de onderkant van de stengel, en bereiken de grond onder een hoek om structurele ondersteuning te bieden.

Stengels

Plantenstelen hebben verschillende functies. Deze omvatten het bieden van structuur, het ondersteunen van de bladeren, knoppen en bloemen. Bovendien helpt de stengel bij het ori&#xEB;nteren van de bladeren om de fotosynthese te maximaliseren. Stengels zijn opgebouwd uit knooppunten, punten waar bladeren en takken aan hechten, en internodi&#xEB;n, de stengelgebieden tussen de knooppunten.

De bladsteel is een stengel die elk blad aan het knooppunt verankert.

Bladeren

De bladeren voeren het grootste deel van de fotosynthese uit. Hoewel bladeren in een grote verscheidenheid aan vormen en maten kunnen aangetroffen worden, zijn de bladen vaak dun en afgeplat van vorm om het oppervlak dat aan zonlicht wordt blootgesteld te maximaliseren. Het uiteinde van het blad wordt het blad of lamina genoemd. Eenvoudige bladeren hebben &#xE9;&#xE9;n blad per bladsteel, terwijl samengestelde bladeren meerdere bladen aan elke bladsteel hebben. Wortels, bladeren en stengels als opslagvaten

Wortels kunnen worden aangepast voor voedselopslag. Taproots zoals wortelen en bieten worden vergroot om zetmeel op te slaan. Stengels en bladeren kunnen ook worden aangepast om zetmeel op te slaan; knollen zoals aardappelen zijn eigenlijk gemodificeerde stengels, ook al groeien ze ondergronds. Bovendien zijn uien een gemodificeerd zetmeelopslagblad.

Plants are built from roots, stems, and leaves, but each organ can change to fit a plant’s environment. These structures may look very different from one species to another. They still carry out the main jobs needed for growth and survival.

Roots are usually underground, but that is not always true. Aerial roots grow aboveground. Epiphytic plants, such as orchids, can live without ever touching soil. In strangler figs and banyans, aerial roots begin aboveground, grow downward, and later reach the soil. Some roots are also specialized for support. Buttress roots help large tropical trees stand upright in shallow soil. Brace roots, also called prop roots, support tall plants like corn. These roots are adventitious roots, which means they do not arise from the primary root. Instead, they grow from nodes near the lower stem and angle into the ground.

Stems provide structure and hold up leaves, buds, and flowers. They also help position leaves so they can capture more light for photosynthesis. A stem has nodes, where leaves and branches attach, and internodes, which are the stem regions between nodes. The petiole is the stalk that connects a leaf to the node.

Leaves carry out most photosynthesis. Many leaves are thin and flat, which increases the surface area exposed to sunlight. The blade, also called the lamina, is the wide part of the leaf. Simple leaves have one blade per petiole, while compound leaves have several blades attached to one petiole. Some plants, such as grasses, do not have petioles. In these plants, the blade attaches directly to part of the stem.

Roots, stems, and leaves can also store food. Taproots, such as carrots and beets, are enlarged to store starches. Stems and leaves can store starch too. Potatoes are tubers, which are modified stems even though they grow underground. Onions are modified leaves that store starch.
