Meristems and Plant Growth

Anders dan de meeste dieren kan een plant zijn hele leven groeien.
 Plantengroei wordt verzorgd door meristemen, weefsels met ongedifferentieerde cellen die onophoudelijk kunnen delen&#x2014;zoals dierlijke stamcellen.
 Alle vaatplanten kennen primaire groei, die de wortels en scheut verlengt.
Primaire groei begint in apicaal meristeem, in de uiteinden van stengels en wortels.
 Ongedifferentieerde cellen delen zich hier.
 Sommige dochtercellen blijven in het meristeem en kunnen zich opnieuw delen.
Andere differenti&#xEB;ren zich deels tot primair meristeem.
 Dit primaire meristeem&#x2014; de protoderm, grondmeristeem, en procambium&#x2014;differentieert zich tot primaire weefsels.
 Het protoderm wordt dermaal weefsel, de buitenste beschermende lagen.
Het grondmeristeem wordt grondweefsel, het grootste deel van het lichaam van een jonge plant.
 Het procambium vormt vasculair weefsel, waaronder xyleem en flo&#xEB;em.

Dit verdikt wortels en stengels, maar zelden bladeren.
 Twee laterale meristemen dragen bij aan secundaire groei: kurkcambium en vasculair cambium.
 Het kurkcambium produceert kurk naar buiten en felloderm naar binnen en vormt zo het periderm.
Het vasculair cambium bevindt zich tussen het primair xyleem en primair flo&#xEB;em.
 Hier vormt secundaire groei secundair flo&#xEB;em naar buiten en secundair xyleem, hout, naar binnen.
 In veel bomen produceert deze activiteit jaarringen, die wetenschappers gebruiken om het klimaat te bestuderen.
Hout uit de lente bevat cellen met grotere diameter en dunnere wanden dan hout van later in het groeiseizoen.
 Een jaar van groei geeft daarom een aparte ring.
 Omdat bomen goed groeien in een warme omgeving met veel water, duiden dikke ringen op warme, natte jaren en dunne ringen op koude of droge jaren.
Primaire groei laat planten hun scheut verlengen op zoek naar licht en hun wortels om vocht en nutri&#xEB;nten te verzamelen.
 Secundaire groei biedt structuur om het verlengen van houtige planten te ondersteunen.

Planten groeien hun hele leven; dit wordt onbepaalde groei genoemd en onderscheidt planten van de meeste dieren. Hoewel bepaalde delen van planten stoppen met groeien (bijvoorbeeld bladeren en bloemen), groeien andere voortdurend &#x2013; zoals wortels en stengels.

Onbepaalde groei bij planten wordt mogelijk gemaakt door meristemen, weefsels die ongedifferentieerde cellen bevatten &#x2013; meristeemcellen genoemd. Wanneer meristeemcellen zich delen, blijven sommige dochtercellen in het meristeem achter, waardoor een constante aanvoer van ongedifferentieerde cellen wordt gegarandeerd. Andere dochtercellen worden langer en differenti&#xEB;ren uiteindelijk tot volwassen weefsel.

Er zijn twee hoofdtypen plantengroei: primaire groei en secundaire groei. Primaire groei vergroot de lengte van wortels en scheuten en produceert bladeren. Secundaire groei vergroot de dikte van wortels en scheuten&#x2013; maarvertrekt zelden&#x2013;in gebieden waar de primaire groei is ge&#xEB;indigd.

De meeste plantengroei vindt plaats in twee soorten meristemen. Primaire groei vindt plaats in apicale meristemen, gelegen aan de toppen van wortels en scheuten. Secundaire groei vindt plaats in laterale meristemen, die langs de lengtes van wortels en scheuten lopen.

Alle vaatplanten ondergaan primaire groei, waardoor wortels de grond en scheuten kunnen verkennen om toegang te krijgen tot meer licht. Primaire groei begint met de deling van ongedifferentieerde cellen in het apicale meristeem. Dochtercellen die het meristeem verlaten differenti&#xEB;ren gedeeltelijk tot primaire meristeemcellen. Primaire meristeemcellen delen zich en verlengen zich, waarbij ze zich volledig differenti&#xEB;ren tot volwassen weefsels en daarbij de wortels en scheuten verlengen.

De wortels en scheuten van houtachtige planten ondergaan naast de primaire groei secundaire groei. Secundaire groei wordt mogelijk gemaakt door twee laterale meristemen&#x2013;het vasculaire cambium en het kurkcambium.

Het vasculaire cambium ontwikkelt zich tot vaatweefsel&#x2013;inclusief secundair xyleem (hout) en secundair flo&#xEB;em. Het kurkcambium vervangt de epidermis door het stevigere periderm. De toevoeging van deze cellen vergroot de breedte van wortels en scheuten.

Plants grow throughout their lives, and that pattern is called indeterminate growth. This trait sets plants apart from most animals. Some plant parts stop growing, such as leaves and flowers, but roots and stems can keep growing for a long time.

Meristems make this ongoing growth possible. A meristem is a plant tissue that contains undifferentiated cells called meristematic cells. When these cells divide, some daughter cells stay in the meristem. That keeps a supply of cells that can keep dividing. Other daughter cells elongate and later differentiate into mature tissue.

Plant growth has two main forms: primary growth and secondary growth. Primary growth increases the length of roots and shoots and also produces leaves. Secondary growth increases the thickness of roots and shoots, but it rarely affects leaves. It happens in regions where primary growth has already ended.

Most of this growth comes from two kinds of meristems. Apical meristems are found at the tips of roots and shoots, and they drive primary growth. Lateral meristems run along the lengths of roots and shoots, and they drive secondary growth. All vascular plants undergo primary growth, which helps roots spread through soil and shoots reach more light.

Primary growth begins when cells divide in the apical meristem. Daughter cells that leave the meristem become partially differentiated primary meristematic cells. These cells divide again and elongate. They then fully differentiate into mature tissues, which lengthens the root or shoot.

Woody plants undergo secondary growth in addition to primary growth. This growth depends on two lateral meristems: the vascular cambium and the cork cambium. The vascular cambium forms secondary xylem, also called wood, and secondary phloem. The cork cambium replaces the epidermis with the tougher periderm, which increases the width of roots and shoots.
