Light Acquisition

Planten vertonen grote diversiteit in bladvorm, -grootte en -ori&#xEB;ntatie.
 De bladeren van het mammoetblad Gunnera manicata groeien horizontaal en bestrijken tot 2,5 bij 4 meter, terwijl sommige grassen korte verticale bladschijven hebben.
 Vanwaar deze variatie in bladeren? Zonlicht is essentieel voor de vorming van glucose bij de fotosynthese.
Daarom moeten planten zonlicht effici&#xEB;nt vangen om te gedijen.
 Bladeren zijn gespecialiseerde structuren die vol zitten met cellen met chloroplasten die zonlicht vangen.
 Over het algemeen vangen grotere bladeren op hogere planten meer lichtenergie.
Maar grote bladeren verliezen meer water door verdamping en hebben meer water nodig.
 Hogere planten hebben minder concurrentie om licht, maar ze hebben meer wortels nodig en aanpassingen om water over grote afstanden te vervoeren.
 Grote bladeren zijn algemeen in natte omgevingen, zoals in het mammoetblad dat leeft in de bergachtige regenwouden van Brazili&#xEB;.
Planten in droge omgevingen daarentegen hebben strategie&#xEB;n ge&#xEB;volueerd om hun waterverlies zoveel mogelijk te beperken.
 Bladeren van woestijnplanten als de creosootstruik zijn relatief klein, met een kleiner oppervlak.
 Fyllotaxis, of de ordening van bladeren op een stengel, helpt om licht optimaal te vangen.
Bladeren ordenen zich vaak op drie manieren in bedektzadigen: kransgewijs, afwisselend of tegenoverstaand.
 De effici&#xEB;ntie van het vangen van licht kan worden ingeschat door bladoppervlakte- index te bepalen.
 Deze index is de oppervlakte van alle bladeren relatief tot het grondoppervlak onder de plant.
Planten met een index van ongeveer 7 kunnen licht effici&#xEB;nt vangen; meer bladeren en een hogere index leiden tot schaduwen en het wegvallen van lagere bladeren.
 Bladmorfologie en -grootte volgen op de selectiedruk van de omgeving en de evolutionaire geschiedenis van de plantensoort.
 Vandaar de diversiteit in bladstructuren die effici&#xEB;nt zonlicht vangen en fotosynthese bedrijven.

lichte acquisitie

Om glucose te kunnen produceren, moeten planten voldoende lichtenergie opvangen. Veel moderne planten hebben bladeren ontwikkeld die gespecialiseerd zijn in lichtverwerving. Bladeren kunnen slechts millimeters breed of tientallen meters breed zijn, afhankelijk van de omgeving. Als gevolg van de concurrentie om zonlicht heeft de evolutie de evolutie van steeds grotere bladeren en grotere planten aangestuurd, om schaduw door hun buren te voorkomen met verontreinigende uitwerking van wortelarchitectuur en mechanismen om water en voedingsstoffen te transporteren.

Omdat grotere bladeren gevoeliger zijn voor waterverlies, worden de grootste bladeren doorgaans aangetroffen in planten waar veel regen valt. In de droogste omgevingen bevinden de chloroplasten van vetplanten zich in de stengel van de plant, waardoor de verdamping tot een minimum wordt beperkt. De ori&#xEB;ntatie van de bladeren ten opzichte van de zon kan ook de lichtverwerving be&#xEF;nvloeden. In uitzonderlijk zonnige omgevingen zijn horizontaal geori&#xEB;nteerde bladeren gevoelig voor overmatige uitdroging. In deze omgevingen, zoals die van graslanden, kunnen de bladeren verticaal worden geori&#xEB;nteerd om licht op te vangen als de zon laag aan de hemel staat, waardoor schade door de zon wordt verminderd.

Lichtvangst kan ook worden geoptimaliseerd door de positionering van plantenbladeren ten opzichte van de stengel; de opstelling van bladeren op een stengel wordt phyllotaxie genoemd. Alternatieve phyllotaxie beschrijft het scenario waarin een enkel blad uit een enkele positie op de stengel tevoorschijn komt. Sommige planten vertonen een tegenovergestelde phyllotaxie, waarbij twee bladeren vanuit dezelfde locatie in tegengestelde richtingen tevoorschijn komen. Whorled phyllotaxy is wanneer verschillende bladeren uit hetzelfde punt op een stengel komen. Het plantenhormoon auxine regelt het patroon waarin bladeren uit de plantenstengel komen.

De Leaf Area Index (LAI) is een weergave van de effici&#xEB;ntie van de lichtvangst. Door het eenzijdige, horizontale oppervlak van de bladeren van een plant te meten en dat te delen door het horizontale grondoppervlak dat de plant bedekt, ontstaat een verhouding. Normaal gesproken duidt een hogere LAI op een effici&#xEB;ntere lichtvangst. Boven een LAI groter dan zeven lijkt het echter schaduw en snoei van de onderste bladeren te veroorzaken, wat geen extra effect heeft op de lichtverwerving. In de praktijk wordt het meten van LAI vaak uitgevoerd via satellietbeelden en wordt het gebruikt om de productiviteit van een ecosysteem te meten.

Plants need light energy to make glucose, so leaf shape and plant structure help determine how well they capture sunlight. Many modern plants have evolved leaves that are specialized for light capture. Leaf size can vary from just a few millimeters wide to tens of meters wide, depending on the environment.

Competition for sunlight has pushed evolution toward larger leaves and taller plants. These changes help plants avoid being shaded by nearby competitors. They also depend on root systems that can support water and nutrient transport to the rest of the plant. Large leaves are more likely to lose water, so the biggest leaves are usually found where rainfall is plentiful.

In very dry environments, some succulents place their chloroplasts in the stem instead of the leaves. This arrangement helps reduce evaporation. Leaf position also matters. In very sunny places, flat horizontal leaves can dry out too much. In grasslands and similar environments, leaves may grow vertically so they can catch light when the sun is low and reduce sun damage.

The arrangement of leaves on a stem is called phyllotaxy. In alternate phyllotaxy, one leaf emerges from each stem position. In opposite phyllotaxy, two leaves grow from the same point in opposite directions. In whorled phyllotaxy, several leaves emerge from one point. The plant hormone auxin helps control this leaf pattern.

Scientists also use the Leaf Area Index, or LAI, to estimate light capture efficiency. LAI is the one-sided, horizontal leaf area of a plant divided by the horizontal ground area it covers. A higher LAI usually means better light capture. However, when LAI rises above about seven, lower leaves can become shaded and pruned, so extra leaf area does not improve light capture further. LAI is often measured with satellite imaging and helps researchers estimate ecosystem productivity.
