Water and Mineral Acquisition

Water is meer dan 80% van de meeste plantenmassa&#x27;s.
 Het is essentieel voor fotosynthese, metabolisme en de transport van nutri&#xEB;nten en andere moleculen.
 Anorganische nutri&#xEB;nten zijn ook cruciaal voor groei en voortplanting.
Zo is stikstof een bouwstof voor biomoleculen als aminozuren en is kalium belangrijk voor het openen en sluiten van stomata.
 Hoe absorberen planten nutri&#xEB;nten en zoveel water? De meeste planten nemen water en mineralen op uit de bodem waar ze in geworteld zijn.
 Plantenwortels scheiden water- stofionen en koolstofdioxide af.
Koolstofdioxide reageert met water en vormt een waterstofcarbonaat- ion en waterstofionen.
 De waterstofionen binden aan negatief geladen deeltjes in de bodem, waardoor positief geladen ionen, zoals kalium, vrijkomen in de bodem.
 Dit proces heet kationuitwisseling en maakt nutri&#xEB;nten beschikbaar voor de plant.
De opbouw en vertakkingen van de wortels zijn essentieel voor de effici&#xEB;nte opname van water en nutri&#xEB;nten.
 De buitenste laag cellen in contact met de bodem vormt kleine wortelhaartjes.
 Deze gespecialiseerde cellen hebben een groot oppervlak dat water absorbeert door actieve en passieve processen.
Water en opgeloste nutri&#xEB;nten kunnen bijvoorbeeld passief de apoplast in diffunderen, die bestaat uit alle celwanden en ruimtes tussen cellen.
 De ruimte binnen het celmembraan heet de symplast.
 Water gaat via osmose de symplast binnen over het celmembraan.
Nutri&#xEB;nten worden door actief transport opgenomen.
 Als water en mineralen in de symplast zijn, bewegen ze zich naar het midden van de wortel door verbindingen tussen cellen.
 Water en nutri&#xEB;nten in de apoplast kunnen echter de stele niet binnengaan door de bandjes van Caspary.
Bandjes van Caspary zijn laagjes suberine, impermeabel voor water, in de cellen van de endodermis, die de stele omringt.
 Deze structuren blokkeren de doorgang van potentieel ongewenste of toxische elementen.
 Om het midden van de wortel binnen te komen moeten alle opgeloste stoffen over een plasmamembraan.
 Eenmaal in de symplast gaan water en nutri&#xEB;nten de stele binnen, die hen verspreidt over de plant om hun rol te vervullen.

Gespecialiseerde weefsels in plantenwortels zijn ge&#xEB;volueerd om water, mineralen en sommige ionen uit de bodem op te vangen. Wortels vertonen een verscheidenheid aan vertakkingspatronen die dit proces vergemakkelijken. De buitenste wortelcellen hebben gespecialiseerde structuren, wortelharen genaamd, die het worteloppervlak vergroten, waardoor het bodemcontact toeneemt. Water kan passief de wortels binnendringen, omdat de waterconcentratie in de bodem hoger is dan die van het wortelweefsel. Mineralen worden daarentegen actief naar de wortelcellen getransporteerd.

Negatief geladen anionen maken gebruik van de neiging van H+ionen om langs hun concentratiegradi&#xEB;nt naar de wortelcellen te diffunderen door gebruik te maken van co-transport: ionen zoals Cl- worden samen met H+ionen gecotransporteerd naar het wortelweefsel.

Moleculen kunnen via twee routes naar de kern van het wortelweefsel, de stele genaamd, reizen. Apoplastisch transport is de beweging van moleculen in de ruimtes die ontstaan tussen de doorlopende celwanden van aangrenzende cellen en hun overeenkomstige membranen. Symplastisch transport daarentegen is de beweging van moleculen door het cytoplasma van plantencellen, waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van cellulaire verbindingen, plasmodesmata genaamd, die de vrije cytoplasmatische doorgang van moleculen tussen aangrenzende cellen mogelijk maken. Om de stele binnen te dringen, moeten moleculen de symplast binnendringen, omdat Casparian-strips die zich in de endodermis van de wortel bevinden, voorkomen dat opgeloste stoffen in de apoplast de stele binnendringen. Daarom moeten opgeloste stoffen, om de symplast binnen te dringen, door het semipermeabele membraan van een cel gaan, waardoor cellen worden beschermd tegen giftige of ongewenste moleculen uit de bodem.

Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil using specialized tissues. Their branching patterns help them reach more soil, and root hairs on the outer cells increase surface area for contact with the ground.

Water enters roots passively because the water concentration in the soil is higher than in root tissue. Minerals move in a different way. They are taken up actively by root cells, which requires energy and transport proteins.

Soil particles carry a negative charge, so positive ions often stick to them. Roots release carbon dioxide into the soil. The carbon dioxide breaks down and releases protons, or H+, which displace those attached positive ions. This cation exchange makes the ions available to enter the root. Negatively charged ions, such as chloride, can also enter by co-transport with H+ as the proton moves back down its concentration gradient.

Once inside the root, substances can travel toward the stele, the core of the root, by two paths. Apoplastic transport moves through the spaces between cell walls and membranes. Symplastic transport moves through the cytoplasm of plant cells and uses plasmodesmata, which are channels that connect neighboring cells. To reach the stele, solutes must enter the symplast because Casparian strips in the endodermis block apoplastic flow into the stele. This forces solutes to cross a semipermeable membrane, which helps protect the plant from toxic or unwanted soil molecules.
