Xylem and Transpiration-driven Transport of Resources

Planten verkrijgen water en nutri&#xEB;nten uit de bodem maar hebben deze substanties ook in verre weefsels nodig.
 Hoe transporteren planten deze substanties tegen de zwaartekracht in? Water en opgeloste mineralen komen de plant binnen door permeabele wortelhaarcellen in de epidermis en gaan naar het xyleem, waarvan het vocht xyleemsap wordt genoemd.
 Het sap wordt uit de wortels naar de rest van de plant gebracht door bulkstroom, een beweging van vloeistof door druk over lange afstanden, door gespecialiseerde transportcellen in het xyleem.
Trache&#xEF;den en houtvaten vormen een flexibel pijpsysteem.
 Hun cellen hebben geen cytoplasma of organellen en hebben ondoorlaatbare, verhoute celwanden, die voorkomen dat xyleemsap naar buiten lekt.
 Het voornaamste mechanisme dat xyleemsap door de plant trekt is transpiratie uit de bladeren.
De lucht tussen mesofylcellen in de bladeren wordt verzadigd met waterdamp tijdens de fotosynthese en celademhaling.
 De lucht buiten de plant is droger dan de lucht in de bladeren.
 Als de stomata open zijn, diffundeert waterdamp langs zijn concentratiegradi&#xEB;nt van de vochtige lucht in het blad naar de atmosfeer buiten de plant.
Een laagje vloeibaar water zit tegen de celwand van elke mesofylcel, wat gaswisseling mogelijk maakt tijdens fotosynthese en celademhaling.
 Als waterdamp door de stomata naar buiten gaat, verdampt een deel van het vloeibare water, waardoor druk ontstaat die water uit de bladnerven de mesofylcellen in trekt om het laagje te vernieuwen.
 Negatieve druk in de bladnerven trekt het xyleemsap dan uit de wortels door de stengel en de bladeren in en transporteert zo water en mineralen door de plant.

Het xyleem van vaatplanten verdeelt water en opgeloste mineralen die door de wortels worden opgenomen naar de rest van de plant. De cellen die xyleemsap transporteren, zijn dood als ze volwassen zijn, en de beweging van xyleemsap is een passief proces.

Trache&#xEF;den en vatelementen transporteren xyleemsap

Tracheaire elementen zijn de transportcellen van het xyleem. Ze missen cytoplasma en organellen als ze volwassen zijn en worden beschouwd als onderdeel van de apoplast van de plant omdat ze rechtstreeks verbinding maken met de extracellulaire ruimte. Er zijn twee soorten tracheaire elementen: trache&#xEF;den en vaatelementen.

Trache&#xEF;den zijn langwerpige cellen met verhoute wanden die kleine openingen bevatten die putten worden genoemd en die xyleemsap van de ene cel naar de volgende geleiden op plaatsen waar hun wanden elkaar overlappen. Zaadloze vaatplanten en de meeste gymnospermen, of kegeldragende planten, hebben alleen trache&#xEF;den, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat ze v&#xF3;&#xF3;r de vaatelementen zijn ge&#xEB;volueerd.

Vaartuigelementen zijn bredere verhoute cellen die verticaal worden gestapeld om vaten te vormen. Ze zijn met elkaar verbonden door perforatieplaten, gespecialiseerde celeindstructuren met ruimtes waardoor xyleemsap kan stromen. Door de grotere diameter en de effici&#xEB;ntere structuur van perforatieplaten kunnen vaten bestaande uit vatelementen een veel groter volume sap verplaatsen. De meeste angiospermen, of bloeiende planten, hebben zowel trache&#xEF;den als vaatelementen.

Actief transport van mineralen cre&#xEB;ert een waterdrukgradi&#xEB;nt van wortels naar bladeren

Terwijl water passief een plant binnendringt via permeabele wortelcellen, is actief transport nodig om mineralen naar het xyleem te verplaatsen. De resulterende hoge concentratie opgeloste stoffen in de wortels cre&#xEB;ert een gradi&#xEB;nt in het drukpotentieel van water in het xyleem, met hogere druk in de wortels en lagere druk elders in de plant, waar opgeloste stoffen minder geconcentreerd zijn. Water zal dan naar de lagere drukgebieden bewegen; deze gradi&#xEB;nt levert echter slechts een kleine bijdrage aan het totale transport van sap door het xyleem.

Fysische krachten op watermoleculen houden vloeistof vast in het xyleem

Het transport van xyleemsap door een plant wordt gedeeltelijk mogelijk gemaakt door enkele fysische eigenschappen van water zelf. De cohesie-spanningshypothese voor het transport van sap door het xyleem werd voor het eerst voorgesteld in de jaren 1890. De cohesie tussen watermoleculen is relatief sterk omdat alle drie de atomen van een watermolecuul kunnen deelnemen aan waterstofbindingen met andere watermoleculen. Dit betekent dat de transpiratiekracht in de bladeren watermoleculen door het hele xyleem kan be&#xEF;nvloeden, als schakels in een ketting, helemaal tot aan de wortels.

Een andere kracht, adhesie, zorgt ervoor dat watermoleculen aan oppervlakken in de plant blijven kleven, zoals de celwanden van mesofylcellen in het blad, waar de wateroppervlaktespanning essentieel is om sap uit de bladvaten te trekken wanneer waterdamp uit de bladeren transpireert. Xylem moves water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant. The cells that carry xylem sap are dead when mature, so the flow is passive. Xylem transport depends on special tracheary elements, which connect directly with the extracellular space in the apoplast.

There are two main tracheary elements: tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are long cells with lignified walls and small pits. These pits let xylem sap move from one cell to the next where the walls overlap. Seedless vascular plants and most gymnosperms have only tracheids, which are thought to have evolved first.

Vessel elements are wider lignified cells that stack to form vessels. Their ends have perforation plates, which contain openings for sap flow. Because of their larger diameter and efficient perforation plates, vessels can move a much larger volume of sap. Most angiosperms have both tracheids and vessel elements.

Water enters the plant passively through permeable root cells, but minerals must be moved into the xylem by active transport. This builds a high solute concentration in the roots. That difference creates a water pressure gradient, with higher pressure in the roots and lower pressure elsewhere in the plant. Water moves toward the lower pressure areas, but this is only a minor part of xylem transport.

Water also moves because of its physical properties. The cohesion-tension hypothesis explains how transpiration in the leaves can pull water through the xylem. Cohesion between water molecules is strong because hydrogen bonding links them together. Adhesion helps water stick to cell walls in the leaf and along the xylem, which supports the pull of sap upward and helps prevent sap from leaking downward when stomata close.
