Adaptations that Reduce Water Loss

Water is belangrijk voor planten voor fotosynthese, metabolisme, en om de celstructuur te behouden.
 Overmatig waterverlies is dus problematisch voor planten.
 Welke adaptaties zijn ge&#xEB;volueerd voor de overleving en tegen waterverlies? De meeste planten hebben een wasachtige cuticula die het bladoppervlak bedekt tegen verdamping.
De opbouw van de cuticula be&#xEF;nvloedt zijn permeabiliteit voor water.
 Kleine openingen op de oppervlakte genaamd stomata bevorderen de gaswisseling en transpiratie.
 Om waterverlies te beperken passen planten de dichtheid en locatie van stomata aan op ontwikkelende bladeren in reactie op beschikbaarheid van water en licht.
In de meeste loofbomen bijvoorbeeld bevinden stomata zich op de onderkant van bladeren.
 De dichtheid van stomata is hoger op bladeren in het midden van de boom en lager op bladeren in de periferie.
 Waterbehoud is vooral van belang voor woestijnplanten.
De woestijnstruik brittlebush vangt water rond zijn bladeren met kleine bladhaartjes.
 Deze haartjes, genaamd trichomen, weerkaatsen de zon en verminderen uitdroging door de wind.
 Andere woestijnplanten zoals Opuntia slaan water op in hun vlezige stengels om tegen droogte te beschermen.
Bovendien hebben cactussen aangepaste bladeren, stekels, die verdamping beperken en hitte wegnemen.
 Planten in droge omgevingen verminderen verdamping ook door koolstofdioxide alleen &#x27;s nachts op te nemen.
 Overdag blijven de stomata dicht.
Dit proces heet crassulaceaans zuurmetabolisme of CAM.
 Een bepaalde bladbouw kan waterverlies ook beperken.
 Kleine of dunne blaadjes verminderen verdamping.
 Grassen verwierven opgerolde of gevouwen bladstructuren die eveneens het oppervlak verminderen en daarmee ook de verdamping.

Hoewel de verdamping uit de bladeren van planten de transpiratie stimuleert, resulteert dit ook in waterverlies. Omdat water cruciaal is voor fotosynthesereacties en andere cellulaire processen, heeft de evolutionaire druk op planten in verschillende omgevingen geleid tot de verwerving van aanpassingen die het waterverlies verminderen.

Bij landplanten is de bovenste cellaag van een plantenblad, de epidermis genaamd, bedekt met een wasachtige substantie die de cuticula wordt genoemd. Deze hydrofobe laag bestaat uit het polymeer cutine en andere van planten afkomstige wassen die worden gesynthetiseerd door epidermale cellen. Deze stoffen voorkomen ongewenst waterverlies en het binnendringen van onnodige opgeloste stoffen. De specifieke samenstelling en dikte van de cuticula varieert afhankelijk van de plantensoort en de omgeving. Andere bladaanpassingen kunnen ook de verdamping minimaliseren, voornamelijk door het oppervlak te verkleinen. Sommige grassen hebben bijvoorbeeld een gevouwen structuur die waterverlies vermindert. Als alternatief ondergaan andere grassoorten het rollen van het blad om te beschermen tegen verdamping. Sommige woestijnplanten hebben bladeren bedekt met microscopisch kleine haartjes die waterdamp vasthouden, waardoor de verdamping wordt verminderd.

Water verdampt voornamelijk via kleine gaatjes in de bladeren van planten, de zogenaamde huidmondjes. De huidmondjes van sommige planten bevinden zich uitsluitend op het onderste bladoppervlak en beschermen ze tegen overmatige hitte-geassocieerde verdamping. Andere planten vangen waterdamp op in de buurt van huidmondjes die zich in putten op hun bladeren bevinden, waardoor het waterverlies door verdamping wordt verminderd, omdat de beschermcellen die de stomatale opening flankeren de relatieve vochtigheid kunnen waarnemen. Sommige woestijnplanten openen hun huidmondjes alleen &#x27;s nachts, wanneer verdamping minder waarschijnlijk is. Deze strategie wordt Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) genoemd. Planten die deze strategie gebruiken, vangen &#x27;s nachts kooldioxide op en fixeren dit, en voeren overdag lichtafhankelijke fotosynthesereacties uit. Plant features that limit water loss help plants survive in dry or hot environments. Water is needed for photosynthesis and other cell processes, so plants have evolved several ways to slow evaporation from their leaves.

One major barrier is the cuticle, a waxy layer on the leaf epidermis. The epidermis is the outer cell layer, and it makes cutin and other plant waxes that form this hydrophobic coating. The cuticle helps stop water from escaping and also keeps out unwanted solutes. Its thickness and makeup vary with plant species and growing conditions.

Some plants also reduce water loss by changing leaf shape. Certain grasses have folded leaves, and others roll their leaf blades to limit evaporation. Desert plants may have microscopic hairs on their leaves that trap water vapor and slow water loss.

Most water leaves a plant through stomata, which are tiny openings in the leaf. In some plants, stomata are found only on the lower leaf surface, where they are less exposed to heat. Other plants place stomata in pits, where trapped water vapor raises humidity around the guard cells and lowers evaporation.

A few desert plants use Crassulacean Acid Metabolism, or CAM. These plants open their stomata at night, when evaporation is lower, and capture carbon dioxide then. During the day, they carry out the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. Scientists have also suggested using CAM in bioengineering to help plants cope with warming global temperatures.
