The Roles of Bacteria and Fungi in Plant Nutrition

Hoewel planten hun voeding krijgen door fotosynthese hebben ze ook mineralen en nutri&#xEB;nten nodig.
 Sommige planten zijn afhankelijk van bodemorganismen om middelen te verkrijgen uit de bodem.
 Rhizobacteri&#xEB;n zijn prokaryoten die samenleven met plantwortels.
Deze diverse groep organismen ontvangt voedingsstoffen van plantenwortels en steunen de plant op allerlei manieren.
 Ze beschermen de plant bijvoorbeeld met antibiotica, absorberen ongewenste chemicali&#xEB;n uit de bodem of bevorderen de opname van essenti&#xEB;le nutri&#xEB;nten.
 Stikstof is een belangrijk deel van eiwitten en nucle&#xEF;nezuren.
Maar planten kunnen stikstof uit de atmosfeer niet gebruiken, omdat ze het niet kunnen omzetten naar biologisch bruikbare vormen.
 In een proces genaamd stikstoffixatie zetten prokaryoten atmosferische stikstof om in ammoniak, dat wordt veranderd in ammonium.
 Andere prokaryoten zetten ammoniak om in nitraat.
Nitraat en ammonium worden door planten opgenomen en gebruikt.
 In peulen, zoals erwten- en bonenplanten, vindt stikstoffixatie plaats in gespecialiseerde wortelstructuren genaamd wortelknolletjes.
 In deze symbiotische relatie vangen Rhizobia atmosferische stikstof en maken ze deze biologisch beschikbaar voor planten.

Planten hebben het indrukwekkende vermogen om door middel van fotosynthese hun eigen voedsel te cre&#xEB;ren. Planten hebben echter vaak hulp nodig van organismen in de bodem om de voedingsstoffen binnen te krijgen die ze nodig hebben om goed te kunnen functioneren. Zowel bacteri&#xEB;n als schimmels hebben symbiotische relaties met planten ontwikkeld, waardoor de soort kan gedijen in een grote verscheidenheid aan omgevingen.

De collectieve bacteri&#xEB;n die zich in en rond plantenwortels bevinden, worden de rhizosfeer genoemd. Deze in de bodem levende bacteriesoorten zijn ongelooflijk divers. Hoewel sommige mogelijk pathogeen zijn, spelen de meeste een rol bij het bevorderen van de gezondheid van planten. In ruil daarvoor krijgen de bacteri&#xEB;n voeding van planten in de vorm van koolhydraten, aminozuren en nucle&#xEF;nezuren.

De bacteri&#xEB;n genaamd rhizobacteri&#xEB;n kunnen planten beschermen door antibiotica te produceren of giftige metalen in de bodem te absorberen. Bovendien helpen bacteri&#xEB;n planten door toegang te krijgen tot anders onbruikbare voorraden voedingsstoffen in de bodem. Planten missen bijvoorbeeld de moleculaire machinerie om stikstof uit de atmosfeer rechtstreeks te gebruiken. In plaats daarvan nemen ze stikstof op in de vorm van ammonium (NH4+) en nitraat (NO3-), dat wordt aangemaakt door bacteri&#xEB;n in de bodem.

Tijdens een proces dat stikstoffixatie wordt genoemd, zetten in de bodem levende bacteri&#xEB;n stikstof uit de lucht om in ammoniak. Stikstoffixatie vereist grote hoeveelheden ATP die bacteri&#xEB;n verkrijgen uit door planten geleverde koolhydraten. Andere groepen bacteri&#xEB;n zetten ammoniak om in nitraat tijdens een tweestapsproces dat nitrificatie wordt genoemd. Deze processen voorzien planten van vormen van stikstof die ze kunnen gebruiken om eiwitten en nucle&#xEF;nezuren te synthetiseren.

Schimmels nemen ook deel aan symbiotische relaties met planten. Wetenschappers denken dat de mutualistische relatie tussen planten en mycorrhiza-schimmels een belangrijke aanpassing was in de succesvolle kolonisatie van land, waardoor vroege planten essenti&#xEB;le elementen uit de bodem konden verwerven. Moderne mycorrhiza spelen een rol bij de wateropname, signalering van groeifactoren en gewasbescherming. Ectomycorrhiza bedekken de wortels en helpen water en mineralen te absorberen. Soil microbes help plants get nutrients, water, and protection. Plants can make their own food by photosynthesis, but they still depend on organisms in the soil to get the nutrients they need to work properly. Bacteria and fungi form symbiotic relationships with plants, which helps both partners survive in many environments.

The bacteria living in and around plant roots are called the rhizosphere. This community is very diverse. Some bacteria can cause disease, but most help plant health. In return, the bacteria receive carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids from the plant. Rhizobacteria can also protect plants by making antibiotics or by absorbing toxic metals in the soil.

Bacteria also help plants reach nutrients they cannot use on their own. Plants cannot use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. They need nitrogen as ammonium or nitrate instead. Soil bacteria make these forms through nitrogen fixation and nitrification. During nitrogen fixation, bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. This process needs a lot of ATP, which bacteria get from plant-provided carbohydrates. Other bacteria then turn ammonia into nitrate in a two-step process called nitrification. Plants use these nitrogen forms to build proteins and nucleic acids.

Fungi also support plant life through mycorrhizae, which are mutualistic fungi that connect with roots. Scientists think this relationship helped early plants colonize land by improving access to soil nutrients. Today, mycorrhizae help with water uptake, growth factor signaling, and plant protection. Ectomycorrhizae cover roots and help absorb water and minerals. Arbuscular mycorrhizae grow inside root tissue and increase contact between plant cells and the fungus’s branching hyphae.
