Endurance Athletes

Endurance athletes are individuals who train and compete in prolonged, primarily aerobic activities, making them important models for studying how the body responds to sustained physical demand. During exercise, oxygen delivery from the lungs and cardiovascular system supports mitochondrial ATP production, while muscles regulate glycogen use, fat oxidation, fluid balance, and heat dissipation. Repeated training can increase stroke volume, mitochondrial density, capillarization, and resistance to fatigue. In biology, research on endurance athletes helps explain exercise adaptation, energy metabolism, cardiovascular health, and limits on human performance, while informing training strategies and the study of conditions that affect these systems.

This protocol uses motion mode ultrasound and surface electromyography simultaneously to measure muscle function of the core. Muscle thickness and activation of the local stabilizers (e.g., transverse abdominis, internal oblique) and global movers (e.g., external oblique) is achievable during specific time points of the side plank and dead bug exercises.

A Neuroscientific Approach to the Examination of Concussions in Student-Athletes

There is great variability in an individual’s risk for concussion and their corresponding recovery. A multifaceted approach to concussion evaluation is warranted; including baseline testing of athletes before participation in sport and timely evaluation post injury. The goal of this protocol is to provide an appropriate multifaceted approach to examine concussions.
